While working on a history of the Nest of Boxes tricks, I started re-reading Hoffmann and realized that two magic inventors had been skipped over in my Brief Biographies of Magic Inventors (on my site). I found quite a bit of information on Joseph Hartz in Hoffmann's "Magic Tidbits" book, but not as much on Charles De Vere. If anyone knows the history of these two 19th century magicians and can point me towards other resources beyond Hoffmann, I'd appreciate it. Feel free to check out what I have so far for their bios and correct any errors or ommissions I might have made by e-mail or PM. Thanks.

Hi Spellbinder,
Two great sources for info on both are Henry Ridgley Evans 1928 book, History of Conjuring and Magic. It has a short paragraph on each. Also, Albo’s Laboratories of Legerdemain has much more in depth info on both, and some pictures too. If memory serves me right, The Linking Ring had some good articles as well on early magic shops. I will have to do some searching to find them though. Hope this helps out. If I find more sources, I will pass them along. Regards, Mark |

Spellbinder,
I have sent you a bunch of stuff with more to follow. Others wishing to read more on these two fascinating characters, see the following Linking Ring issues. They are lengthy, informative articles. Charles De Vere: June 1974 Joseph Michael Hartz: June 1927, May 1931, June 1997 |

Thanks for your help, Mark. I was able to add additional information to both biographies after reviewing your research, as well as additional illustrations and the links to posters of Okita and Iona that you found. I hope everyone will appreciate the results of your research and join me in thanking you for contributing to our magic historical records.
