Hi everyone,
I'm currently trying to learn some basic magic to pass along to my eleven year old nephew. He has that special love of magic that I would like to encourage and if that means I have to jump in first to learn things to teach him, well then that's what I'm going to do. I've already talked to some nice folks over at the newsgroup alt.magic and they have recommended several starter magic books for me to read. Those are on order and I'm sure that I'll have questions after I begin to work through them. I hope I can do a great deal of lurking and learning and avoid asking stupid questions but I'm sure I'll let one or two stupid ones slip through now and then. Bear with me, please, I'm trying to make a new magician. ScotDeerie |

Seems you're going to be making 2 new magicians, counting yourself of course! As they say "once you're bitten by the bug, there's no going back". I'm sure you'll find an astounding amount of info here, as I have, and may your visit to the Café be a long and happy one!

The folks at alt.magic seem to have pushed you in the right direction when they suggested books.
Working with books 'Mark Wilson’s Complete Course In Magic', 'Amateur Magician's Handbook' by Henry Hay, 'The Magic Book' by Harry Lorayne will get you off to a wonderful start. I just wonder how, as someone new to magic yourself, thinks he can take on the role of teacher. Try learning as a peer with the eleven year old. He may teach you a few things along the way. Good luck on your journey and welcome to the Café. |

Not so much "teacher", Jax, but as someone who is going to show him some of the possibilities and take him where he might wish to go. If that means that I have to find a magician who gives lessons in this area, then that's what will happen. First I have to whet his appetite by coming up with a few simple tricks I can show him/teach him. Then we'll see which way we'll go from there.

Welcome to the forum ScotDeerie.
I've always been interested in magic but my parents were much too practical to allow me to waste my time on money on something so "silly". The interest festered in me and when my son was about 5 years old I took him to the local magic shop and bought a few things. Like most children, he thought it was fun. For a couple of years I dabbled in it with him, and then we moved to Las Vegas where our interest really took hold. He's 12 now and we moved away from Vegas a couple of years ago. I really wasn't in a position to "teach" him much, we were really discovering things together. In our new home we found a mentor for my son, someone who has since turned into my best friend. We joined the local magic club which has a big help, and I've learned much here at the Café. We now do father and son shows at birthday parties, retirement homes (the older folks love kids), fairs, etc.. I'm sure you're getting your fills of recommendations, but as someone else already mentioned, Mark Wilsons Complete Course in Magic is a great one to start with. You're lucky to also have found a child to help you get into this fun and interesting "hobby" or whatever it may become to you. Have fun!! |

Thanks for the welcome and info, everyone!
I enjoyed your story, Gordyboy. I wonder how many adults have come to magic because of a child in their life? More than a few, I bet. In fact, one of the books I ordered yesterday was about a Grandmother who learned magic with/for her grandson. You can see it here, if you wish: http://mindguy.orangelounge.ca/store/books.html It is the eigth book listed, "For Grandmas, for Grandpas..." ScotDeerie |
