I was looking to get into hypnosis stuff, but don't know what book I should read to get into the "meat" per say. I've read on the basics of hypnosis, but nothing "meaty". I understand stage hypnosis is basically 10% are actually hypnotized and the 90%+ are just acting like they are hypnotized so they don't look like ***s screwing the tricks up. I'm more interested in the person on person hypnotism though. For instance, I've seen Derren Brown make a guy drunk just by showing him a card that had a word on it (I'm guessing you would call that an anchor), him steal stuff off a guy (russian scam), and make a woman think the color red was actually black (making her think her car turned black). Anyone know where I could learn the basics behind that, with examples I could try on friends?

I have read a book by Derren Brown called "tricks of the mind", he recomended reading:

1. Hypnosis: Compliance and Belief; Graham F. Wagstaff
2. Jay Haley on Milton H. Erickson; Jay Haley
3. Hypnosis: Current, Clinical, Experimental and Forensic Practice; Michael Heap

From the descriptions he give, I believe the books are just mainly things I already know (overviews of hypnosis). The second one sounds promising though from the description.

Again, can anyone recomend any books for me to read to learn hypnosis's "meat"? Also, NLP may work into some things in the above examples that Derren Brown did. Can anyone recomend books on that as well (Mainly looking for hypnosis stuff though)?

Thanks for taking the time to help .

I guess it depends on how you know about hypnosis. If you're a complete beginner then I'd recommend you check out sites on hypnosis and read the forum archives first. You could also see if there's any books in your local library. Even make use of the inter library loan.

Here's two books I like

Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis: In Medicine, Dentistry, and Psychology by William S. Kroger

Trancework by Michael Yapko

Deeper and Deeper by Jon Chase. All about how to do stage hypnosis.

The Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnosis - Ormond McGill.

Training Trances - Silverthorn.

and my book - releaed next week. Reality is Plastic - The Art of Impromptu Hypnosis.

The books you have mentioned are all fine. However, Professor Wagstaff believes hypnosis is all about social compliance and has spent the last 25 years trying to prove that - seems he never got over being a hypnotists mark on stage.

Jay Haleys book is seminal but will just show you how good Erickson was and not how to hypnotise.

don't know much about the third one but I suspect it will not turn you into Derren.

Hope that helps.

I second the book Trancework by Michael Yapko. It is the meat of hypnosis from a clinical/theoretical perspective and covers many ideas and theories.

Of course the meat can also be found here, I view it as a textbook on DVD: http://subliminalscience.com/index.php?m......ts_id=24

I've said it recently but it bears repeating...

Go to Nongard1's site. Get the Black Book of Stage Hypnotism and the DVD of the Micheal John's induction.

Very meaty.

I haven't seen the DVD he links but as the Black Book is based on them I would think they are also very, very good.

I find myself in the difficult position of recommending something I haven't seen so take that into account. I have read the book based on these DVD's though. If you can, get the DVD's...for many that format teaches better.

Example: I read the Black Book several times before viewing the Micheal Johns DVD induction. In the book the induction is described. It did read very good. Then I watched the video. That sold me.

That induction knocks them out like nothing I've seen. For years I did a very nice, "velvet voiced" (to quote Lee Earle) relaxation induction. I then learned the Ronning EKG induction. 200 bucks and worth it!

I consider the Micheal Johns induction to be much better.

I wouldn't have thought this without actually seeing the DVD. I figured the first group of four he demo'd on were buddies but even taking that into account it was clear they were being sent to LaLa Land. At the end of the DVD is Micheal doing a Vegas show induction...knocks them into next week too.

I wouldn't have appreciated the power of this induction had I not seen it.

Get the DVD's.

Ok, cost wise etc, I'm thinkin of getting these products:

1. Nongard & Johns - Little Black Book of Stage Hypnosis Secrets
2. The Michael Johns Stage Show Induction
3. Trancework by Michael Yapko

With the Michael John's stuff, it says "stage hypnosis". Does that stuff "work" for just individuals too? I understand the jist of it, but I have heard stage hypnotism is pretty much mostly acting. Of course hypnotism isn't some "superpower", but I think you would approach individuals differently. Any thoughts on that, and if the above would be good to read if I'm trying to do things on individuals? Thanks for any info.

Stage hypnosis is not acting. The fact is stage hypnotists get people in faster, deeper than most other hypnotists. There is just no need to hope a dozen people turn up and decide to act.

Stage hypnosis inductions work fine for individuals but a book that is not just about stage hypnosis might offer you a more rounded approach.

Actually, the MJ induction is a great clinical induction as well as stage induction. People go out deep and fast.

Stage hypnosis is NOT acting, no need to have stooges or fakes, becasue hypnosis works and is highly effective....

I am not going to bother even raising the 90% of people are acting to the level of a serious comment by addressing it.

As for what to round out your knowlege, get the 3 things you have listed. That is a pretty nice frame work. You won't be sorry.
