I used to buy these packets that I would throw into a campfire and the flames would change different colors.
Does anyone know what is in the packets? Thanks, Ogre |

Crystals from various chemicals, each one capable of changing the color of flames to a particular color. You'll find the details in any of the old chemistry/magic books on Learned Pig, most particularly DRUG STORE MAGIC by Eli B. Johnson.

You can prep pine cones and other "burnables" with various chemicals available in the supermarket, but it's easy and cheap to use Rainbow crystals. I've often used these and another brand's rocks when my son was in cub scouts at the camp fires.
http://www.fireplacestuff.com/catalog3/rainbowfire.htm I have not ordered from the above site, but they should be available at any fireplace store.

As a follow-up, and to the poster's original question, the "magic" color-inducing chemicals are generally metal salts.
A brief description of the science behind it, as well as brief descriptions of the colors given off by various chemical compounds, can be found at http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/jcesoft/cca......D2R1.HTM For do-it-yourselfers, here's a good site, including some good precautionary advice. http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howtos/a/aa052703a.htm

I normally use these.
http://www.skylighter.com/mall/novelty.asp#NV6010 Just throw a packet or 3 in a fire. These guys also sell a chemical Copper Chloride (aka campfire blue) that you just throw in a fire to make a great blue. http://www.skylighter.com/mall/chemicals.asp?Sort=C#ch8091 To actually buy the chemical from them, you will need to verify your age on their website. To get the packets though, you need only your credit card. |
