I was recently contacted by an exotic dancer who wants me to teach her some magic that she could incorporate into her "exotic" stage performance. I have a few ideas, but I'm looking for some suggestions. Any ideas?

Always thought Celeste Evan's act would have been great for an exotic dancer. Though probably a bit more involved than she wants to learn.

This is an interesting thread that has the possibilities of great ideas thrown in. Let's see how it goes.

Ok. I think the first thing to do is to get and set some graound rules first. You can not begin to be creative until you know what goals you are first trying to meet. In this case I take it that she:
- Has to still be an exotic denacer so I assume she needs to strip down to babe minimums during the act - She probably will have to use music - She may have a certain time frame in which to do this so that will need to be determined before hand - She probably will not be speaking so patter may not be importantr in this - It would also be important to note what "stage" area she has to work with. Angles may be a problem or something to consider when working on the ideas. - If she wants to or needs to move around a lot, then you have to factor that in so that she can move easily while still doing the magic created. - She may not have any tables or appratus if that blocks the view of people or causes set up problems Now this is just some of the stuff I would ask her before even beginning to figure out an act or idea. These answers to the questions will really help define what it is that needs to be created and how we create it. I think this actually could be a great way to learn. It is a challenge for sure but every good challenge can lead to discovery and learning. Kyle

She works in 3 different clubs. 2 are topless, and 1 is totally nude.
All 3 venues have similar stages, which are basically "runway" type platforms with the inevitable pole about halfway down. The audience sits along both sides of the runway as well as at the end (basically surrounded). All the girls perform to music (no patter concerns). Depending on the number of performers working on a particular night, each girl comes out and dances for either 2 or 3 songs. They call this their "set". Generally, each performer will do 4 to 6 sets in a shift. Some girls do the same set over and over (same songs...same choreography), and others do a different set each time they come out. My girl (her stage name is "Trouble"...isn't that adorable) wants something magical in each set, and wants each set to be different. It is not her intent to turn her performance into a "magic show", but to cleverly inject some nice, classy, visual magic into her act. She is allowed to bring props onstage for her act, as long as everything comes out with her when she's introduced and she immediately begins her act. In other words...no multiple trips backstage dragging out equipment. I hope this helps set the scene for what she's looking for. Thanks for everyone's help! Brett

Would imagine she would need sturdy props as they will be thrown amongst the discarded clothing and bundled up by someone and thrown backstage.
Silks can take that, they are pretty, can match the costume and can be quite sexy if choreographed - run through hands and over various areas of the body - even held between the teeth by one corner and stretched out suggestively. Being as tactful as possible I will say they can be used first to complement - then mock, male virility. Tony Clarks Rose to Silk. Gloves to Streamers or Spring Flowers - strippers always look hot cheekily taking a glove off with their teeth finger by finger. Depending on her costume the comedy long glove can also work. If there is tipping on the catwalk - disappearing a note and cheekily touting for it to be replaced might increase her earnings. (I heard that you dirty dirty Ursula fans - the disappearance of the note, as you appear to have forgotten, can be accomplished in many traditional ways.) If she is a big busted girl she could appear an 8' pole from her bra, hold it upright on the catwalk and pretend to dance around it Destiny |

Instead of the old "Bra Trick" she could do it with "boxer" shorts by pulling a guy on stage. (I think they sold a "boxer short" version years ago !)
Unfortunately, the stripper could not do any tricks with lapping .... of could she ? ... it was not clear if the tricks could be performed close-up? If the exotic dancer wants a stage effect, maybe the "Twisting HEAD" illusion would be good

If she's willing to respect the secrets and invest the time and resources to take it seriously, go for it. On the face of it, this does make for an interesting challenge - visual magical elements to be performed silent, nude, surrounded and at quite a close distance. Herein lies the problem though - that'd be quite an ask even for an accomplished pro magi to pull off well. And to be honest, I think the biggest danger here is in getting carried away. Basically what we're after is a magic themed act with a few quick things to establish the character during the striptease instead of getting bogged down with tricky business while lapdancing. Maybe she could enter via some kind of appearance illusion (eg Spectre Cabinet) in top hat, tails and fishnets - from there she can incorporate some simple hat productions and maybe a few quick change gimmicks as part of the striptease. It'd be nice to find a way to vanish items of clothing as they're removed but this is probably more hassle than it's worth - the point here isn't to win Magic Castle awards and as Ruth Wallis sang, "Nobody looked at the hat". If she does want to incorporate tricks into the actual lapdance, rather than go nuts on intricate close-up and TT tricks I'd use corny stuff like the old 1-2-3-gone routine - a tired obnoxious cliche as performed by most male magis but in the hands of a hot exotic dancer it could be quite cute and coquettish. |

In the 70s, Vegas was loaded with exotic dancers who used magic. How difficult it was watching Carnival Ribbons! They may have even used doves too. I never noticed!

Pat has sold her Chameleon Change gimmicks to exotic dancers and she is also currently working on tear away tuxedo pants.
Dancer can come out in a suit or tux and in a flash, be wearing a gown, negligee, underwear, whatever. On a similar note, I remember (as a single younger man)a magic exotic dancer from the 80's who did dove loads. More recently (as an older married man) I saw advertised the "Naked Illusionist" female exotic dancer. Apparently she did a full magic set with illusions. Her, I did not get to see. Maybe next time, just for research purposes. All the best, Rob |

Actually it's funny you ask this, just last week, I was Looking for magic performances on youtube, and there was this " Burlesque magic " act... she did things with Rope... and false knots.. she would get a guy on stage to sit on the chair, he thinks he's getting a lapdance... she would tie him up...with false knots, etc.. and they would come off with a magical pull... at one point she tied the knot around his neck, and the guy was sweating... then she tugged atthe rope and it went through the neck... I think the BDSM aspects of the routine worked pretty well for her.
Maybe something along that nature...

I remember the first time I saw that Ursula bit. Very funny stuff. Would be great for magic.
However, I think a female in black lace and a top hat fanning cards would be "Verry Niiiiice" (as Borat would say)

The rope routine clip is from a group called "Stand not Amazed". I don't really know much about them, but they have a web site with more clips. This is one of them, which also features dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSIHENB6CQg&feature=related |
