While not "the best right now," I do think there is a name from the past that is missing from this thread.
Robert Downey (I'm pretty sure I've got the name right.) He is no longer with us. I saw him once at Abbott's (around 1979?). With some acts, one can tell when the steal is made. With many acts, one is aware of the misdirection that covered the steal. With Downey's act, not only did I not see the steals, I couldn't even figure out what the misdirection was. |

John David Bass's dove act was the reason for me getting into magic; saw it on The World's Greatest Magic.
I am a huge fan of Tony Clark. I love his work, own a lot of his dove products, and am going to be taking a few private lessons from him on dove magic. I also say Frewin and Sperry are very good! Saw them in Murray Hatfield's show before. magic mike |

Andy Amyx, Lance Burton, Tony Clark, Shimada, Channing
These are the TOP 5 in my opinion. Someone who doesn't get mentioned that would crack my top 10 is Jason Purdy, and the other 4 are Jason Byrne, Amos, Sperry, and Rick Thomas. That's my Top 10! Sorry, Bairefoot, I like yours too, and your in my top 20, but I'm not listing 9 more. - Carl Michael

Dan Sperry's dove color change has to be the ballsiest move I have ever seen.

Dove-boy, I produce my appearing bird cage to put my birds in. I produce a bird, and then next, I produce the cage to put him in.

No one mentioned Chris Moss? Man, is his stuff good.
I am biased to mention Sperry, as his act is what has gotten me into doves... But WOW... That chest level bird vanish melts my head. Amyx is also a smooth worker and a very nice guy; had quite an informative phone call with him a few weeks back. C

This is a very interesting read. Everyone that posted seems to have their own preference. And thanks for the big list of dove workers, I have still yet to view their performances and am wondering how and where I can get the clips.

I honestly have not seen all of the performers mentioned, but of those I have seen, my vote goes to Dan Sperry, Lance Burton and Greg Frewin.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

After working with doves since the '50s, I have to say that Channing was the best. Even my dear friends Shimada and Johnny agreed. I was using doves when he came out, and he blew me away. What class and polish. I'll never forget Herman Hanson telling to go downstairs, to Steuben's, and catch his act. All I can say is, it was unforgettable.

Shimada, Levkovitch, and Lance Burton. I've seen them all and like them in that order.
