What is this a promo for? Potential clients? If so, I'm not a fan. You're dressed in a t-shirt, doing magic with Styrofoam cups, in a shopping mall.
Additionally, the video looked like it was filmed in the late 60s (was this a conscious decision?). It looks like Woody Harrison produced it... If it was just for fun, I liked it. I thought the campy look was cool, and I enjoyed the music. Plus, the audience shots were great! Ben

It's a compliation video, I wouldn't neccesarly say it's my marketing video for potential clients. Rather to show my talents, get people to visit my site etc. Yes it was made to look campy, I had lots of fun doing it.

I am a bit confused if this is to attract clients or just a YouTube clip. If you are going to attract clients to your website or to call you, I would suggest the following. 1) Contact information should have your phone number and address 2) Testimonials in the first part of the video 3) Make the potential client want to call you after seeing the first 30 seconds. 4) Who is your target for this video? 5) If your target is high schools, summer camps and colleges I think the raw clips you have may work. If it is for companies I would suggest redoing your footage, put on a mic, storyboarding your video and film several gigs with great audience interaction and reactions. 6) Final promo less than 3 minutes. 7) If you feel you need music it is best to stick with royalty free loops. Tarzan boy is a copyrighted song. Good luck, John |

Hahaha I think we would all agree it would be best to take this video down haha. I tend to agree with you all, thanks for your advice. I'll refilm it once I get the right layout.
Once again thanks for all your constructive feedback! Cheers Francis McAllister |

Woah, I didn't say take it down.
If it was made strictly for fun, I liked it (something I haven't said in a while!). Play with it some more, and keep doing what your doing!

I agree, have fun with this project and find out what is going to work best for you and your style.
The more fun you have with filming the better your performances will look. Understanding that you will probably go through several hours of film to get the 3 minutes that set you apart from other magicians. ~John |

Having spent a long time thinking about a promo video for myself, and completely storyboarding it etc, I spoke to several of the UK's top industries and past clients, not one said they would watch a promo video. I didn't say 'I have a promo video, do you want to see it' sort of thing, I merely asked when hiring entertainment services, did they watch promotional footage, and 99.9% of them said, they had no time to watch the videos, or look at the site. The only thing they are interested in is whether you are going to do the job. I have seen promo videos up to 8 minutes long!!! I guess it depends on what area you are targeting, but restaurants, hotels, corporate work etc don't generally have time to watch promo videos. Instead, get quotes and references, and some nice photos. If it was a choice between someone watching a clip for 4 minutes, or reading a quote from some high up celebrity of sorts, 9/10 times the person will go with the quote.
This is just something I have picked up from my experience |

I would agree with some of Christopher's information. If you have already made contact with a prospective client by a referral or through networking I would say the video is not needed. The video would then be 'selling to someone that is already sold on your talent'.
But if the prospective client is searching for a Magician via Google or the Yellow pages for an upcoming event for their company the video is a useful tool to communicate the information you would like them to know about your service prior to the prospective client calling you. Your marketing plan should never consist of one avenue of marketing. You must hit prospective clients with many types of marketing (cold calls, yellow pages, website, networking, referrals, newspaper, direct mail) to capture the wide verity of prospective clients. The promo video should be used as one of your tools in your marketing arsenal. ~John |
