I usually have a fair amount of change in my trouser pocket as I don’t keep coins in a wallet or anything. I wondered if any one had any ideas as to how to keep my hopping half coins in the same pocket as my regular coins, but keep them separate in way that allows me to reach into my pocket and immediately remove these gaffed coins.
It needs to look as though I am merely removing two ordinary coins from my pocket full of change, yet I need to be able to get to them easily. Also, anyone who has Hopping Halves will know that the shells do separate from the coins. And so a solution to the above will also need to prevent the shells from separating from the coins. Hope all that makes sense!? Any ideas would be appreciated. How do you store your gaffed coins ready for use? Cheers Damion |

Personally, I use an Apron but a watch pocket is always an option. If you know someone with a small bit of sewing knowledge, they can sew a small square pocket into your trousers pocket providing a seperation from your regular change. A pocket within a pocket if you will. You can actually do a few layers giving you a sort of personal file system. (S&S outer pocket, other gaff middle pocket, coins for inspection inner pocket.)
Hope this helps!

You could use a small coin pouch as well, with different compartments. It's not unusual to carry these around.

Sew a coin sized pocket inside your sleeve. When your hands are dropped the coin stays safe, raise the hands above a certain height and the coin slips out, when you drop your arms the coin slides into your hand. This takes practice but once mastered its very effective. I am yet to work out a way to zipper up the pocket when not in use.

Excellent idea Rob! My dress trousers already have a coin pocket in them. I will try to add another overlapping one to this, probably offset slightly so I can feel it easily. I'll also try adding one to a pair of jeans. I think this is a very workable idea, I'll post my experience with it. Thanks!

I found a coin wallet off of MagicSmith and it works well! It is a very small wallet that unrolls and has tons of pockets for coins and gaffs. It is big enough to fit a silver dollar sized coin too, let alone half dollar sized ones. It is very nice leather too. I can keep shell is this, nested or not, and it will remain unharmed. Get one of these things. They are the best!!!

I only have two gaffed coins -- Scotch and Soda and Folding Coin. Both are kept inside my regular wallet for use at a moments notice.
I don't need to carry a bang ring with me, as the S&S are easily separated. It makes for great impromptu, but cannot be easily examined. Brian |

These are all great ideas. I have spent my Scotch and Soda one too many times to admit too.

Well, here's a sugestion and I use this as I have the same problem as all, I end up almost spending my coins, what I do is use a bulldog clip and it's pinned to the inside of my coat, kinda like a match pull, now I also use this idea for in the pocket but I pin it in there and use a smaller clip, try that and see if that helps.

Coin dealers have a variety of plastic pouches and cases for coins. I have a couple of plastic wallets full of gaffed coins - mind you for storage, not for carrying around. Also, if you visit your local office supply or Target store, there are 35mm slide holders that can just as easily take coins. These can keep the things organized that you are not currently using.
Finally, I would be a bit leary of un-lined leather pouches for long term storage. The acid used in tanning the leather can tarnish the coins fairly quickly. Had that problem with some coins I left in a small leather coin purse for several months. tr |

When travelling I put gaffed coins in a little round locking mint tin that I found at a Border's Bookstore coffee shop. It holds the coins securely (up to Morgan dollar size) and the tin can also be used as an Okito box.

If you happen to casual and just wearing jeans you can buy 5-pocket variety that have the very small upper pocket on the RH. In Sport coats, look for types that have the small inner pocket (within a pocket), which is great for seperating coins.

First, the gaff I always carry is Coin Bite. The only difference is, my effect is in 3 pieces. I carry Coin Bite, a matching quarter, and a piece of another quarter that I cut off with wired snips. This piece is hidden in my mouth for the bite and restoration so they can see I really took the piece off. Second, to hold them together (for a quick way to grab them when needed) is to use an alligator clip. You can find them anywhere.

I carry my coins (most of which are NOT gaffed) that I use in my act in a coin purse. When I bring it out, I usually say something like, "This contains money. Remember money? I keep it in here, so that one of these days, I can show it to my children." I think that's an old Duke Stern line.
If I am strolling, the coins go into the ticket pocket of my jacket.

I'll only mix them in a pocket if they are different coins completely. For example, if I have my dime and penny with me I will make sure none of the other coins are a dime or a penny ... allows me to do one quick reach without fumbling too much and i can pull EVERYHING out at once. This also lets me plant another coin in another pocket for palming etc.
I have used the small pocket in jeans but people seem to always notice me reaching into the small pocket so I've stopped doing that. I've considered sewing a smaller pocket inside. I just need to do some trial and error for the perfect size to quickly get in and out of it. Let me know if anyone has experimented with this and where their placement of the small pocket is. Thx ~V |

I have a small "Scotch purse" that David Lederman showed me how to use. It's shaped like a half-circle and opens on the circular side into a little "shelf" that you can use to hunt for the correct change.
It has an extra flap pocket inside which is perfect for gaffed coins. I keep may "Spare Change" (David Acer) set, plus another two silver dollar-sized coins, and never have to worry. I liked these so much I bought a local art store's entire stock of them. If you send me your snail mail address I'll send you one free. For other tricks, I use individual purses or wallets, so I know which trick is which and to avoid having too many gaffed coins on me at the same time. One set is usually enough for a table-hopping session. Paul Green, on his "In The Trenches" DVD has a great idea for the Hopping Half which I use for Copper-Silver-Brass. Get the DVD - it's got some great ideas and material. Hope this helps, Eric Henning |

Why don't you just STOP spending half dollars? I would sometimes run low on dough and go ahead and spend them for little things. Before I knew it 100.00 bucks in half's was gone. You can spend them like wildfire you know. So, I just got some 64's and decided NO MORE. That seemed to work for me. And, I haven't spent a S&S or gimmicks. Just have to watch out for the gimmicked pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters etc... Those I just keep in a 4.00 coin purse.

Levenger makes a nice leather coin storage "wallet" ideally suited for quarters. Under $5 if I remember.

Why not just use the small pocket built into the pants or jeans? For me it works great. Keep a handful of change in the regular pocket bring it out as you're explaining your trick. Let them see you going through the coins, casually put them back in your pocket because you don't really need all those coins, reach into the small pocket and bring them out. You're set! Works for me.
