I heard that a hard drive based IPOD like the IPOD Classic is prone to damage, especially after a drop.
Any experience out there? Thanks Andy

Any and all hard drives, whether the 1.8" found in the full-sized iPods or the 3.5" found in a desktop computer, can be susceptible to damage. Lots of moving parts in there, so if you bang it around too much, it can become damaged or broken.
With that said, an iPod Classic should be able to take a certain amount of abuse. The ocassional jog, a jostle, bump, or drop, here or there should generally not be too detrimental. I had a 4th generation iPod for over 2 years and never had a problem with it. My 5.5 generation iPod is almost a year old and is still going strong. If you're really worried, I'd suggest getting some type of rubber or silicone case, which can help absorb any little shocks. iSkin makes particularly good cases, and I'd image they should be available soon for the new Classic models. The other option would be to get a flash-based player like the Nano, Touch, Shuffle, or iPhone. You won't get nearly the same capacity, but failure rates for flash storage are much better than for hard drives. Good luck. Kevin

Yes don't drop your ipod, or dunk it in your coffee.

Thanks guys - I settled for a flash disc player with an Mini-SD slot. Guess, flash discs are the future. Today we have 16 GM - if I am not very much mistaken. Anyone want to make a guess when we will reach 80 GM?
