You could always do an inner city outreach with your Gospel magic. Do a show packed with tons of cool tricks.
Then your name could be Agrippa Magic- lol

I remember years ago that I was approached by another well-meaning Christian, who objected to me using the word "magician" and "magic" to describe who I am or what I do. Instead of the standard recommendation of "illusionist", this person recommended "trickster". This all happened in print, in a local Christian newspaper (nothing face to face, or over the phone).
Anyhow, I personally think "trickster" is worse than "magician", but some might not. What about calling yourself "The Fishy Trickster"? Now there's a name for a gospel magician. - Donald

I once was told by a mother that "Gospel magician" was an oxymoron. By the way, her children were big Harry Potter fans.

Down here in the southwestern U.S. the Native Americans used to call the coyote the Trickster. In their ancient spiritualism it represented the Devil, or Trickster.
So I would feel uncomfortable using that moniker down here!

I heard once that "The Trickster" has something to do with the Tarot deck. Can anyone confirm that? That's one of the reasons I stayed away from it. Also, when you use a title like "trickster", I feel that it challenges the audience to try to figure the magic secrets out even more. It pulls away from the entertainment aspect of the art. - Donald

The original purpose of the Tarot was for a game called Tarocchi, an early precursor to bridge. All of the so-called occult symbolism that has been attached to the Tarot deck started in the Eighteenth Century when a barber who dabbled in the occult deemed the tarot to be an ancient divination device. It wasn't, as it had never been employed for that purpose before that time. As for the Trickster Archetype, it has nothing to do with the devil or Satan as those are Christian concepts that don't quite fit the idea of the trickster. Loki, the Norse God and Coyote the Native American deity are closer to the traditional Trickster motif than Satan.

Regardless Donald of what "trickster" means in history I still think it has a negative vibe and I wouldn't use it.
I agree with you in that it sounds worse than "magician". |

If you're presenting the Gospel using magic, call yourself a Gospel magician. If you are a christian who performs magic, call yourself a christian magician. If you don't want anyone to know that you are a christian, call yourself whatever you want. If people have a problem with whatever you choose to call yourself, welcome to the real world.

Yeah, I choose a name, did an email flyer yesterday, and got 2 bookings already and 9 emails of interest (out of 78 recipients). So I guess it worked. I think it did have to do with the marketing, the ad, and the wording more than the name - but the name does grab the attention. Thanks for the all the help folks!
Norden the Magician Presents: "What's the Magic Word?" Come find out what the 'word' is while Norden amazes us with a mix of Miracles and Ministries! etc.... So - I used my name - albeit my last name, but that is what I go by...and named the show (thanks for that idea) and used some other words to entice. Obviously the ad is done with some graphics and more wording, but you guys gave me some good tips and I just wanted to say that I love this forum! Norden |

I'm glad to hear you used your own name. As a youth pastor I see a bunch of dumb advertising everyday. Everyone looking for a special edge to get me to remember them. All that goes in the trash. If I'm going to book someone I want them to be honest and real with my kids. Oh also, I want them to be good at what they do. but I'm not going to book them off how cool their name sounds. I'm going to ask around. Maybe work more on building some good reviews and letting word of mouth sell your show, not some new marketing strategy.
Just a thought

Thanks John for sharing...that's exactly the kind of information folks need to read. Being a pastor, I'm the same way, the slicker it is, the less likely I am to even consider it.
This is the type of inside information that's needed... |

Plus, how do you know their stage mane isn't their birth name anyway? What if your birthname was Jesus or Moses? Would you book the Magic of Moses Show or Jesus the Magician for your church event? Sometimes a name change is neccessary. Not everyone is graced with an appropriate performers moniker at birth. Just ask Orlando Scarnecchia AKA John Scarne

He's talking about ministry not just an act. For secular work, I wouldn't hesitate to book some of your examples, I might even consider booking you Payne, but when it comes to ministry I'm not looking for performers as much as ministers.(I want them to be good in both as a magician and minister)
That's the difference...now if I was booking a performer to entertain at a church event, I don't care what he or she calls themselves, but it is very different when you are talking about the ministry aspect of it. If you're not in the ministry, you won't understand that...I'm on the inside being a pastor so I know of what I talk about. I use to have a stage name when I was just an entertainer, but now that I'm in the ministry, it doesn't matter. They don't book me because of my ability to perform as much as it is my ability to reach people, and magic is just a tool that I use. I feel they get a high caliber of program, but I care more about the reaching folks. There you have it from a Pastor's point of view. |

I agree that as a pastor or minister the use of a stage name might be a detriment but the original question posted on this thread was to come up with a stage name for a gospel magic act. I really don't see that as ministering any differently than say a gospel singing group or gospel rock band that would appear under a stage name of some sort.
I think we've been talking about two different things here
