Ok I just finished watching this, and here are some thoughts:
I am new to hypnosis, but not to NLP, etc, so I do not know if I am out of my league here. It would have been nice to see chapers, and recaps. I mean on the DVD it says "Learn _____"? But where? If I want to review a certain section, I have to rely on my memory as to which disc and where. I don't know why Nongard kept looking at the camera, but at times I thought it a little refreshing. Almost like looking directly at the viewers, "Are you getting this?" As far as the content I will not know until I do it, and you best believe I will be. I never though inductions can happen that fast, but seeing it time after time close up and personal (not just from the DVD), I find it absolutely amazing! 2 questions: 1) I also purchased Richard Nongard’s Learn Hypnosis DVD, but what other ones would you recommend for a magician turned hypnotist? 2) How can I obtain an autograph (I collect aurtographs)? Thanks!
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

In any case, it is best if you receive a fundamental foundation in clinical hypnosis, so you will have a better understanding of what is happening and why it happens, so you will be better able to handle different situations that may arise in stage or street performances. If you're interested in more of Richard Nongard's stuff, a trip to http://www.HypnosisGurus.com or http://www.SubliminalScience.com (see banner ad at top of this forum) will offer numerous resources for stage, street and clinical learning, and he even offers great books by Anthony Jacquin (also on this board) and Geoff Ronning, too. There are tons of learning resources out there - some better than others - but the more training you receive, the more knowledgeable you will be and the better equiped you will be to perform in numerous situations. And when possible, try to attend live trainings, as hands-on instruction is (usually) more in depth, and you get to ask specific questions for clarification. As for an autograph, if you PM me your address, I'll have Richard scribble for you ~ Paula |

Thanks for the comment Thomas. I am glad you have got value from it. Other resources not mentioned that I rate are the following books: Trance-formations Training Trances and Deeper and Deeper Speed Trance DVD will give you more very rapid inductions than you will ever need and plenty of insight into why they work and what to do next. I have been watching everything out there with Trance Master. This is my opinion only but I think his one man demo/show and considering the following factors: safety, entertainment value, believablity, demonstration of phenonmenon and comedy ranks up there with the best Ive seen of hypnosis shows. Safety is the number one factor with me and also credibility. Talking with intelligent people who have seen hypnosis shows, most Ive questioned think its play acting and/or stooged. I defend it of course but since I perform suggestion already in my mentalism performances, believablity means a lot to me.
Of course, a lot of this depends on the personality of the performer and not everyone has the Trance Master's ability to pull off a one man act and still make it entertaining, funny and believable. Funny skits involving the audience volunteers and getting tons of laughter is still all good, not saying it isn't. I am just making a total assessment here. Speed inductions amaze the public people just in case you have not noticed. Whether you do it like John, or your own arm yank, or an Erickson hand to eye fixation, it stops people in their tracks. Society has changed. Fast food and fast inductions. We want it now and we want it fast. Just my take. Respectively submitted, Candin Hypnotic Entertainer PS: Well mister, how many hypnosis shows have you seen? I know that's what you are thinking. Not saying Trances is better, but just as good when considering all the factors mentioned above. Are there some dang funny and entertaining hypnosis acts? Darn right. I like to sleep in the day and when its all said and done, concerned with one person and what legalities they could cause verses several on stage and bogus litigation to me is not worth it. One volunteer and be funny and entertaining and controlled better. You carry insurance? Yes, post-hypnotic suggestion "you will not sue me."

Always remember, you can still do the arm pull for those MP's age. I The arm is tugged at a 45 degree angle and down. Quickness is the key, not strength.
If you hurt them its your own dang fought, not mine. You should average 90 percent or better with pretalk and proper audience selection. It would be 95 percent but the other 5 percent are the fakers and just going for a little cat nap. The public needs not to know. Your pretalk can probably get you 97 percent if you word it right. I have yet to decide on which speed induction I like the best yet. I still love the Ericksonian handshake one which is tough to beat and deadly. It is looks and is gentle compared to the Hypno-Sculpture and Arm pull. The arm pull is not violent or rough, it just looks that way. I bet anyone who does it correctly can ask the subject and they will agree. Their eyes were closed and didn't get to see how off balancing they were causing the false sense of the violent nature illusion. When it doesn't work, this can be a show in itself if you have paced it correctly. They will normally just stare at you and stumble a bit (liked they tripped on something which should have produced trance but conscious override). Laugh with them and immediately move to another speciman saying "its not trick as you can see." Go for a failure or two just to get your hands dirty or practice on a family member (odds are reversed). Having OCD helps also. Candin

If you are a magician wanting to be a stage hypnotist get three things:
Richard Nongard's Stage Course on DVD...the best, the most practical course I have seen. Step-by-step. Click on his profile or see his banner ads here. Terry Stokes presents Stage Show Induction: How to Hypnotize Anyone, also from Richard Nongard. Discussion of many aspects of stage in addition to his practical, effective induction. Ronning Guide to Modern Stage Hypnosis from amazon. This book is currently the best book out there. It is excellent. That's what you should get to start. There are other things that would be quite helpful... Anthony's "Reality is Plastic"...this used to be in my top three for recommendations but got bumped by the Terry Stokes DVD....what can I say? Terry Stokes is wonderful. Still, Anthony's book is worth getting...it should just be fourth on your priority list. Pretty much anything from Richard Nongard...he gives real world stuff. Search the posts here...he can teach it and do it. Two good products I do NOT recommend.... Ronning's stage course on DVD. This is a very good course. If you bought it you got your money's worth. However I think Richard Nongard's course is far better and half the price. Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism by Ormond McGill. Again, a good book but dated (sometimes dangerously). Ronning's book, mentioned above, is the gold standard now. Just my opinions... |

Thanks for the nod Mota. I will check out Terry Stokes stuff.
I also recommend Deeper and Deeper by Jon Chase if you want a pragmatic practical how to do stage hypnosis book. Anthony

I will also recommend Anthonys books (and the DVD if you can chase one down). Awesome stuff, people ask me why I don't write a stage hypnosis book, and I tell them by, Ronning already did!

Also I found that Ormond McGill - The new encyclopedia of stage hypnosis is an excellent book to learn from. It taught my a lot of fundamentals and theory behind hypnosis, and not just how to hypnotise. It also gives breakdowns of other performers stage acts and gives a variety of inductions to learn. Its also very good to learn about the fundamentals of hypnosis and why it works. It does touch on rapid inductions but it also gives many ideas to perform on stage. I think to learn hypnosis can be a little challenging but you can eventually get it.
But I think what makes a good hypnotist ( apart from speed of getting someone in hypnosis ) are the ideas that they have to use in a performance. The more original an act the more refreshing it will be to the audience. All the best with your journey. PS I almost forgot to mention, the Ormond McGill video lectures are amazing too and if you could see his stage act you will very very pleased at the speed he does it at. Again, all the best. |

Here is my review of "Speed Trance: Instant Hypnotic Inductions for Stage, Street, & Clinical Hypnosis" with John Cerbone & Richard K. Nongard. I had posted it in the DVD review section, but thought it should be repeated here. YMMV.
Today, there is a major interest on rapid and instant inductions among neo-hypnotists and magicians, as well as among hypnotherapists. For some reason, the neo-hypnotists want to do things like come up to a person on the street, put them under hypnosis instantly, and then stick their hand to a trash can so it won't come off. Ha. Ha. This has led to some amazingly UNSAFE ideas. One DVD shows hypnotic inductions where victims seem to have their arms almost ripped from their sockets and then fall to a hard ground. I'm just waiting for injuries and lawsuits, followed by anti-hypnosis articles in newspapers. On the other hand, for trained professionals, rapid or instant inductions can be very valuable. They can look impressive on stage, and for clinicians it gives more time to do changework rather than playing with inductions. It was with the latter in mind that I purchased "Speed Trance." This is supposed to teach instant inductions and I have seen Richard Nongard's name as an instructor of stage hypnosis in several places. The DVD set (there are 2 DVDs) comes in a skinny box. The cover sheet looks amateurishly designed in something like Microsoft Word. The disks are not printed, but have stick-on labels that you could buy at Staples. Sorry, I was unimpressed. When you get to playing the disks, there are two things that pop out at you. First, the titles and transitions are very amateurish. Second, the entire thing on each DVD is one long presentation. This just begs for breaking down into chapters, and even basic authoring applications allow you to do this. Each DVD is about an hour and thirty minutes in length. It features clips of Mr. Cerbone and Mr. Nongard doing inductions at two different venues. It appears as if there were very few people there. If these guys are so good, why not give clips from some big shows? Between the brief clips are the two gentlemen lecturing and teaching. They look quite natty, although I wish that Mr. Nongard would comb his hair. They are standing and talking in what I'm guessing is a smallish office. There is a flip chart with writing on it for visual aids. I found this to be very 20th century. You have the ability to do titling, why not use it? Again, the flip chart looks very amateurish. But let's assume that you really don't have a problem with the chart. Well, there's a big microphone on a stand in the center of the image that blocks the chart. Again, amateurish and poorly thought out, especially for DVD that retail for $89.00 On the other hand, the quality of the image is absolutely excellent. I've seen far too many videos where the quality is horrible. Unfortunately, it is a one-camera talking heads presentation. In fact, I think that there may not have even been a camera operator as toward the end of the second DVD Mr. Nongard has to go behind the camera in order to zoom in and give a close up on Mr. Cerbone's hands. Frankly, I was thoroughly disappointed with the clips of people being hypnotized. There were very few people hypnotized and they frequently repeated the same clips. Is this padding to get extra money from consumers? When Mr. Cerbone has some people doing stunts, he kept shouting at them throughout the stunt, as if he didn't believe they would follow his suggestions. I've seen other stage hypnotists do that and I don't consider it to be as good as those who give suggestions and then get out of the way, letting the trancers become the true stars of the show. The first DVD is basically an introduction to what they are doing. They make some claims that I consider bizarre. For example, they define a rapid induction as an induction that takes less than a half hour and an instant induction as one that takes less than five minutes. Mr. Nongard repeatedly says that hypnosis is just relaxation. On the first DVD their explanation of a confusion-based induction seems confused, although they get it right on the second DVD. I think the problem here is that they haven't decided whether they are doing instructions for beginners or for more advanced practitioners of hypnosis. The real meat of the set is on the second DVD. They literally begin by spending about 15 minutes talking about safety. I can't applaud them enough for the extreme effort they give to this, especially when compared to others who don't even mention this. The tips and attention to detail is absolutely outstanding. I wish all teachers of hypnosis would stress safety even half as much as they do on this DVD set. They give excruciatingly complete explanations and details about several instant inductions. These do not merely take less than five minutes. They literally take seconds. The techniques are a combination of several things, but mostly include eye fixation and physiological confusion, leading to mental confusion that sets people up for very rapid inductions. Some well-known methods are given, such as Erickson's handshake and the famous hand-press techniques. The keys, however, are three of Mr. Cerbone's techniques. The first is called the "Cerbone Butterfly." The second is called the "Finger Pointing" or "Finger Vacuum" method. The third consists of a swiping motion that can even be faster than the other two. Each is well explained and I think any experienced hypnotist should be able to add them to their repertoire. I wish that for the demonstrations they had called in some other volunteers rather than simply hypnotizing each other. The swiping motion induction, according to Mr. Cerbone, was something he just invented a couple of days before this production. On one level, it makes one wonder if this will be effective as it has obviously not been tested on more than a few participants. Such a small number does not prove its effectiveness. More importantly, in my opinion, is the idea that he is demonstrating: virtually anything can become a form of induction. In this case, not only is it an induction, it's an instant induction. This is important for hypnotists both new and experienced to understand. Learn the concepts of induction, get rid of the scripts, and use what will help any particular client. Although this is marketed to stage hypnotists (and wannabe stage/street hypnotists), there is a value to this DVD set that is incredible. Mr. Cerbone may be the best stage hypnotist in the world, but in my opinion it doesn't show on these DVDs. However, the positive suggestions Mr. Cerbone gives are incredibly good. Outstanding. I wish everyone could see and hear the ease with which he spontaneously gives these suggestions. I would urge people to listen to what he says for suggestions and letting people leave with a positive attitude. It is absolutely wonderful, and I can't possibly say enough good things about it. So let me summarize: Highly padded. Should be edited down to one DVD. Amateurish production, but excellent video quality. Should have more examples rather than repeating clips of the same people doing the same thing. Focus on safety: excellent. Explanation of several known and new instant induction techniques: thorough and very good. Value of watching Mr. Cerbone give suggestions: so good it is impossible to even give a value to these DVDs. My suggestion: If you've studied hypnosis for awhile, you've probably watched some videos that are really bad. These are amateurish and padded, but not bad. Are they worth ninety bucks? Just for the teachings of the inductions, no. Just for the focus on safety, no. But when you combine these teaching with Mr. Cerbone's incredible use of suggestion, you will easily get your money's worth and more. This set is good for stage hypnotists and even better for hypnotherapists. If they make enough money off of them I would hope that they can add different and better clips and take out the padding. I've paid more for a lot less, and you'll find a lot--and I really mean A LOT--to learn and like from these DVDs. |
