Andrew, (ASW)
The effects on the DVD and lecture notes are far beyond your abilities. (They require mastery of the mechanic's grip.) It would only break your heart. Sincerely, Darwin Ortiz.......(This post has got to be in my top 5.) |

Hopefully they are teaching examples of how to make a good presentation for simplistic tricks to amaze your audience. That is definitely a worthwhile project.

I'm sure this will be great! I love his Party Animal DVD. I believe this will be another winner, regardless how simple the tricks are

So none of the material is Dowden's, correct? He got thrown the material 24 hours before filming, correct? The set will cost consumers over $40(i'm assuming), correct?
I like Dowden and I enjoyed the party animal dvds but I feel that this is ANOTHER example of a saturated market. Just repackaged stuff over and over and over and over...but always a clever "excuse" or "reason" to rehash old material. Tell me again why the "kidz" shouldn't dub dvds like this? I forgot... |

Hi Everyone,
I thought it was about time I joined the thread and said a few words about this project. I understand that some people are sceptical and I don't hold it against you because lets face it...there is a lot of rubbish out there in the magic market. However, please allow me the chance to explain firstly why we have made this, and secondly what people can stand to gain from it. Ok, firstly Bugjack hit the nail COMPLETELY on the head...thank you for that. Let me just say that I LOVE magic. Magic is my life and I love everything about it. I love watching it, I love learning and practicing it and I love performing it and getting that reaction that we all get so hooked on in the beginning. It’s still all anyone talks about. “What sort of reaction does it get?” “What’s your biggest reaction?” “How was the gig...did you get good reactions?” I'll get back to this later. As a lot of you know I have a DVD out there called "Party Animal" that I poured my heart and soul into, and I was EXTREMELY flattered with the response that it received and the kind comments that I got from so many of you. I wouldn't do anything to jeopardise that reputation. Therefore I wouldn't get involved in a project unless I thought it would be both FUN and USEFUL to people. This is also why I am not rushing into a Party Animal follow up until I am satisfied that I have enough strong new material to justify it. Russ Stevens who is an amazing DVD producer approached me with an idea. The main concept was to show that you could take a bunch of self working tricks and, with even "the slightest" bit of thought, make them REALLY entertaining and powerful. This is where the 24 hour bit was conceived. The reason that we did this was to show a) how easy the tricks really are (there isn't even a double lift or double undercut in the whole thing which I think is an achievement in itself) and b) how it doesn't take a whole lot of thinking to come up with your own patter lines and presentation for a trick; because how much thinking could I have done in 24 hours? Plus we thought it would be FUN; and after all, isn't that what this business is all about? We are not suggesting that you learn 14 tricks in 24 hours...that was just what I did for the DVD and I do believe that with most magic you should spend years perfecting it. But these are SELF WORKING and we are hoping that people see what we did in 24 hours and realise what could be accomplished with even more time and effort. We are hoping that people find the tricks and my presentation entertaining, but then go away and make them their own, and that is a lot easier to do when the tricks are self working. I have been guilty in the past, as I am sure you all have, of watching a DVD, seeing a trick performed and then learning that trick with the exact same patter etc as the person I saw performing it. We wanted to show that with even a little thought, you can come up with a story line, a bit of presentation or even just a hint of your own personality that will make a trick your own. Now I am not saying that I have put a story to every trick as that is not my style but I have certainly tried to BRING MY OWN PERSONALITY to each effect. This is also why it works best using completely self working tricks. There is nothing to think about as they are self working leaving you with a blank canvas. You are free to think of your own presentation and work on it without worrying about being caught doing a move. Therefore it is a great project for complete beginners to learn about and work on their performance/presence as an “entertainer”. We wanted to encourage people to try it out for themselves. Now having said this, don't be fooled by the "self working" bit as there are some GREAT effects on this disc; some of which you may not know and others perhaps you have forgotten about. There are loads of things on here that you can use in your regular act or, as I say on the DVD, use in that special situation where you were booked to do a gig for 300 people over 2 hours, 15 people show up that all want to watch at the same time and they keep shouting MORE, MORE…I speak from experience!! Either way, you will find them entertaining to watch. Getting back to the fact that we all LOVE to get that big reaction, I think it is exciting to realise that you can take some self working tricks and get the kind of reactions that you see on the demo. That actually brings me to another point made by motown on the first page. I TOTALLY agree with you mate about the reaction thing on demo reels IN MOST CASES. It’s a great point that you make. But in this case, the tricks are all self working and we have described them on the box so there wouldn't be as much to gain seeing the tricks as there is on a DVD which has new effects as its selling point. For example, in the Party Animal demo you saw a card shrink in mid air, a deck vanish which caught magicians out and some other things that were useful in showing what you might gain from the DVD in the way of material. This project is all about the REACTIONS you can get from self working tricks. If we showed the tricks and didn't show the reactions then you wouldn’t know whether or not we were living up to our word about being able to get those kinds of reactions. Anyway, again I see your point but I hope you can understand where we are coming from. Finally, the last thing we want to do is scam anyone so if you don't think this DVD is for you then feel free not to buy it. However, we feel strongly that even the sceptics will enjoy this DVD, and everyone will get something from it whether it is being reminded of an old trick or simply enjoying watching the REACTIONS that I was talking about. Anyway, the reviews will be the deciding factor I guess but for now I would just like to ask that you don't judge it before seeing it. We just wanted to do a fun project and share it with you all. Thanks for reading Matthew |

I'd be interested to know if these effects require the deck to be set up in private or are there some impromptu effects aswell ?

No, seriously - I kid because I love - the important thing this DVD teaches is that you don't have to spend any time to speak of developing a presentation for such effects, making the effect your own, or any of that stuff old people care about. JUST DO IT! They're called "self-working" effects fer a reason, ya moke! Please stay tuned for my new DVD, in which I read out effect descriptions from Tarbell. You should see the reactions I get! "THat sounds interesting." and "Wow, I'd like to see that." are but a few of many .... |

Matthew- thank you for your very well stated reasons for making this DVD. Your project should be helpful to magicians of many different levels for many different reasons. Learning how to imbue tricks with our own personalities is extremely useful, especially for those of us not as creatively gifted to invent our own effects. And considering the quality of your magic and teaching skills on Party Animal that you've brought to the community, you've earned a lot of credibility for your next project. I am anxiously awaiting for 1...14...24 to be offered at my usual dealer.
