Guess I could have said and outie is now an inneee.

A few years ago I began using improv bits when a prop or routine went askew.

These days I plan them. Last night for one of my impromptu bits I was given a ladies cane. It became a sword, magic wand, limbo stick(the lady declined to limbo with me) and a toilet paper holder.(to my chagrin with no toilet paper)

What else could you have created with a cane?

Hat's off to Jonathon Winters for inspiration.

(My back still cringes thinking of the time a folded up round wooden table was pointed out to me. It was funny as a steering wheel..but no fun for my back the next day)

We used to do these in acting class. A cane, let's see . . .

*A giant toothpick
*I'm an explorer, I've discovered the North Pole!
*A spyglass . . . Arrrr, matey! (And then it's my pegleg.)
*The magic staff of the great Regulus, into which he imbued his soul, making it the only object which, in the proper hands, can defeat the hideous daemon K'r'gaa . . . ah, no, now that I look closer, it's just a cane. Smile

Like anything it depends on both the performer and their audience.

As a magician and ventriloquist I do it all the time.

As an improvisational prop comedian, it happens a "bit" differently.

I must have discovered the South Pole too, then . . . Smile

Matt, isn't "playing make believe" all any stage performer does? Like Harris says, it's what you make of it: if I tell you I was moved to tears by two guys pretending to look for a lost handkerchief, you might think I was nuts, but if I tell you it was Christopher Plummer and James Earl Jones in Othello, you might understand.

My programs have brought both laughter and tears.

One example of when the tears came: When a lady (after a show) said it was the first time she had had a good laugh since her husband died.

Red Skelton was a good example of bringing laughter, tears and thought during his programs. A good clown/comedian can do all 3.

Thanks Matt and others for the food for thought.
