Book of Secrets is one of the best books in magic I own!! Great effects and much better theory. It changed my thinking about magic and take my magic to a higher lever. Everybody who wants to improve his of her magic and would change his or her in to art should read this book...Besides the lessons following the effects and the essays, John gives you assignments to study.

I'd like to nominate this as one of the best beginners books around.
Yes, I said beginners, but don't get upset! Carney has a great and deep understanding of magic, and the rare ability to teach it well. Gift this book to a studious and dedicated beginner and you will see great things happen. Having said that, many magicians might read "great for beginners" as "easy stuff, below me", and I hasten to say that this is not the case here. There is certainly a lot to learn from this book for ALL magicians of ALL skill levels, and I recommend it as a must for every library. |

I recently ordered a copy on ebay. I'm very much looking forward to working through it. Does anyone care to offer their favorite pieces or moments in the book?

Beautiful book. I've referenced it countless times over the years, always finding some new insight or technique to mull over. The book grows with you. It's always fresh and exciting.

The insights, philosophies, and techniques that Carney shares is a mother lode of gold! This book will make you a better magician and human being if you absorb its contents. I rate it on par with the Dai Vernon Book of Magic and one of the top ten books in my collection. Senno--there is so much great material that pointing out one or two effects seems futile. His cups and balls routine is one of the best variations of the Vernon routine I have ever read. Carney's take on the Rosini Thimble routine is another beauty. |

Yes, thank you both. The book is beautiful to behold. There is so much here, I understand what you're saying about pointing out a thing or two seems futile, but thanks for your thoughts. I'm looking forward to savoring this for years. I was very curious about the linking ring moves before I got this (they are great), now I'm excited to work through the Silver and Glass, it looks like a beautifully orchestrated piece.

I've looked at John's site and seen that his last 3 (obviously excellent) books are all out of print. Has he ever released second editions or is eBay the only place I'll be able to find them now or in the near future?

I can't speak directly for John but I did hear him talk about Book of Secrets at a lecture a couple of years ago. He had the last two or three copies with him and said he wouldn't be re-printing it. He published it himself and it's a major investment to have that many books printed and then to store them and fulfill orders. It's possible he could decide to reprint or to turn it over to someone else, but I didn't get that impression at the lecture so I think eBay and other sources of resale are the best options now.

The Book of Secrets was reprinted once. My copy is the second print run. I missed it on the first run and wasn't going to let it slip though my hands.

One of the best books on the art of sleight of hand magic in history.

You will have to be patient and keep looking Juliano but you can try Byron Walker in California or Mike Henkel in New Jersey.
