This sounds great. Thanks Mr. Robbins. I was lucky enough to catch the seance you did in NYC last year. They were excellant. I will be sure to get to at least a couple of these as well. I see on the website it states that the midnight shows are for adults only. Is the content for those shows differant then the others? If so I will have to make sure I catch one of them as well.

I have no idea why they put that "Adults only" thing on the midnight shows. I guess I will have to perform them in the nude...but only the darkroom section! See you in Red Bank.
Todd By the way, the show I did in NYC was an early version of this show. This time around, I have a full professional theater company producing it will full lights, sound and a glorious set. Plus a full crew. Man, oh man it is a lovely luxury to do this show with complete support. I think you will like it. There is a new 'talking to the dead' message section and a number of other audience participation bits. And the darkroom section has all the bells and whistles. Because of the way I set up the whole thing and the context of my presentation, less is not more with this show. More is more. |

Thanks for the tickets. Liked the show, and my cats name is Frosty not Freddy.
one thing that was off a bit, and I don't know what to do about it but the exit light on my right was flickering a bit, at first I though it was for effect but then it was just distracting. I looked at it just as one of the flash effects happened and totally missed it. Love the premise of the "this is fake" but... lots of fun.

Cats can be like that. It is hard to get a correct name out of them when they are dead.
Thanks for the note on the exit light. As you can tell, darkness is important something to make the exit light dimmable. We just set it up yesterday and did not know that the air conditioning system would jostle it around and cause the light to bounce all over the place. It has been fixed. Thanks for the nice words about the show. It has been a lot of work, and we are still feeling our way around with it, but that is why I am in Red Bank. No one has ever really done a show like this, so we are trying something new and learning a lot as we go along. Rev. T.L. Robbins |

Also saw the show last night. I enjoyed it a great deal. I was wondering what was up with the exit light. It kept distracting me through out the show. Glad to hear it's been fixed.
Having been in situations where paranormal activity was present, you did a nice job of re-creating it. No, I don't talk to dead people either, they never give you a straight answer As for the cat's name, he'd of answered to Freddie... he would have answered to anything including late for dinner (he was a lovable mush though). Best of luck with your run! |

What a great show! What a clever performance the act was as a whole. I don't want to give any description as to ruin it for anyone. But get your tickets...now

Good morning.
I thought the seance Todd did last year was great, but this was even better. What self respecting spirit could resist parting the veil, and spending some time in that setting? Todd creates a perfectly chilled cocktail of creepiness by mixing humor and fear. I know I will be going back again. JPK

This is an update on the progress of Charlatan's Seance run in Red Bank, NJ.
It has been a wonderful experience. The only way a show like this can succeed is to work hard on it, try it out before a real audience and then adapt and improve it based upon what is learned from this experience. The run started on 10/02 and the show has changed a great deal since that first audience saw it. I have taken out the prologue. I was getting too many psychic coming to the show and they were ****ed off. Their negativity was polluting the vibrations coming through the ether. So, I have substituted a silent opening piece that lets the audience know what I am doing is all fake, but it doesn't insult anyone's beliefs. I will wait to do that in the Secrets of the Seance Sunday night performance I will do if a NY run of the show happens. I have also changed some of the order of the show and revised my approach on the spirit message service section of the show. And tonight I add in a Russian Roulette routine to the show. I do this, "To show my ultimate faith in the spirits." M. Lamar Keene would be proud. After tonight's performance I might be hanging out with Harry Houdini. I will tell him "hello" from you all. If you haven't seen the show, I hope you will. And if you have, consider coming again to see the changes. Rev. T.L. Robbins |

Rev.,
I enjoyed you're interview in Oracle. Just read the online portion and anxiously await the printed part. Good luck with the Roulette tonight. Don't forget to miss. How long is the run for this. I won't be up that way until Thanksgiving. Raven

We run until 10/31, but I am working on seeing that this show lives on. We shall see.
And as for the psychics that were upset that my show is not complimentary to the Spiritualist frauds of the past and present, well, they should have seen it coming. Todd And the Russian Roulette worked tonight. I think I will keep doing it until it doesn't. |

Darn I loved the opening 'this is fake..' and ending with.... well it seams to come full circle, if that makes sense.
and as for the "psychics" who got mad. If they were psychic they would know that they would not like it and have saved there cash. and if they had any other doubts, the word CHARLATAN should have given a hint.

I don't think they were prepared for the harshness of my opening statements and therefore they were upset for the rest of the evening.
As I mentioned, I want to do an extra show on Sunday evenings if we do an open run somewhere. The idea is that this performance would only be open to people that have seen the regular show. I would spend a good hunk talking in specifics about the frauds of the past and put into this show all that I took out of the regular show. And I would do a number of routines that don't fit in the regular show, such as Power of Darkness and a spirit cabinet. Then the last ten minutes of the show would be the dark room section of the regular show done with the lights on. This would show everyone what frightened them so. And it should make them want to buy a ticket and see the regular show again, perhaps bringing family and friends along too. Making them feel like insiders is what causes a audience to take possession of the show. This is one of the things that lead to Penn & Teller's success. Todd |

Good afternoon Rev. T.L. Robbins.
That is a great idea. I would definetly go to a show like that. I'm coming to see the show again next week, with a couple of friends. They have not yet seen it and I've told them nothing about it other then how much I enjoyed it. I'm not going to tell them this until we get there, but I'm not going to sit with them. No reason they should gain any comfort from sitting next to someone they know especialy in the dark. Hooooooohhhhaaaaaaammm.... JPK

I too loved your interview in Oracle - your take on how to disclaim without having to hammer the audience over the head with it is wonderful... I wish the Penny forum people would read up on your style....!
I look forward to one day seeing your live performance! Fellow simulation facillitator, Bruce

It is amazing how little creativity and imagination there is in magic and mentalism. The major influence on acts are other acts. This is one reason that I like the bizarre side of magic. The possibilities are endless.
The whole disclaimer thing just boggles my mine. There are so many ways to perform without confusing people with what is going on. A temporary suspension of disbelief is what we should be after. It is what is powerful about movies and theater. We get wrapped up in what is being presented and react to it as if it were real, but at the end of it we know it was merely a show. This is important as all performance leaves behind is the theme and message of the presentation, and that is what art is all about. The medium of the art fades, but the purpose and intent are everlasting. I wish we did more of this in magic. If we did, magic would truly be an art. Todd |
