I have always been accused of being pushy, this made me a great salesman for many years. it has certainly helped me as a street performer. before I made the leap to go full time as an entertainer everyone told me that there was no way to make a living at it and that I needed a "real job" and that busking or performing was just a hobby with no money in it. listening to this advice cost me a lot of money, years doing jobs I didn't want to do and cost me a marriage. please see; "real job" in my blog. my feelings are that if I "push" one person WHO WAS BORN TO BE A PRO into making the leap and alienate those thousands who were not born to be a pro, so be it. THIS IS NOT TO SAY that I do not appreciate those hobbiest part timers. part timers are the lifes blood that keeps our industry afloat not just finacially but certainly CREATIVELY! I have not ment to offend anyone at all and it is my belief that if you were to buy my book or at least read my blog that a person could definately get an understanding of were my head is at. if you were born to be a part timer THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR OUR INDUSTRY,REALLY, THANK YOU! but I would like to say that the idea that one cannot support themselves or their families as an entertainer is false. it is a lifes lesson I had to learn the hard way and now I am gonna preach it from the mountain tops for all those going through the same dilema. the key is; information, education and application. and that's what I have been trying to do with the blog and the book. I am sorry that my opinion hits a nerve or sticks in a craw, but I hope you can believe my heart is in the right place. good luck in what ever endevors anyone chooses. your pal jimmy. |

As a part timer, I have learned to more appreciate how good (the good..) pros really are, and how much time and effort it would take to get to that level. I just try to make my show so good that I don´t give the pros a bad reputation, that´s where I´m at. And I have a constant bad conscience for not having a more unique character... but working on it.
And John, without us part timers, our audiences wouldn´t have anything to compare with when seeing a really good pro. Like in a marathon, all the thousands of runners defining the winner and how good he is. Håkan :wavey: |

I'm thankful for the constant flow of new material coming from part timers dreaming new stuff up all the time.
and also all the help I have recieved from them in all aspects of life. their other jobs have certainly come in handy for me when I was in desperate need of a service outside the magic industry. it has certainly widen my range of friends that I can trust and that understand my special circumstances. and also I am embarassed to say have helped me hugely when I was down and out. |

Perhaps this thread re-enforces a very critical point...to get good you have to go out and do it, do it again, do it agian,do it again, and again, and again...
Figure out what works for you , work it and work on it.. then it will get better... Hiding in your room in front of a mirror will never get the experience you need, and the hat don't lie, right Jimmy?

And the only way to get better is real world practice in front of real world people who pay you ( or not) real world tips.
Perhaps one of the best lines in my show came as a pure accident... but the audience reaction made it a keeper and it is in my show now. You don't get that feel hiding in your room with a mirror... like nike says... "Just do it"

Hey Jimmy,
I got motivated when I caught Dan's fantastic act in Boston about 5 years ago at Fanuil Hall. I was in Boston at one of Hank Lee's conclave functions and was also performing at the "Real" Cheers while I was there, love those business trips. Dan really got me thinking about doing Street Magic..Then I saw Gazzo & Cellini and man was I hooked. Took my act out on the street and boy did I suck....no structured show for the street, act was way too long...did all the wrong things.. Started looking at The Café section on Buskers, checked out all of the great buskers here and some of the acts are like...no wonder they're doing such a great job, structured acts, making good money. Then I saw Kozmo and he slayed me...great stuff, very funny. Then I saw your act and I was completely blown away that no table, no pockets full of magic tricks, per se...but an incredible act that ENTERTAINED the audiences...Mario's stuff was music to the eyes.... SO I changed my act around to make this work. I always knew I could do this. Now it's all I really want to do at every opportunity I get. Every new magician that I run into through the local clubs I try to teach them to go here, read your blog, get byour book, get Koz's video...get all of the Street Magic stuff you can find, read it, digest it and like you said so profoundly...Get off your butt and go do it......To all of the Great Buskers that have shared their thoughts and How-to's here and on their videos and books, we thank you because you all helped make us better.... Jimmy Your Book rocks, can't recommend it high enough....Kozmo's DVD is a work of art. Koz will be seeing you at Denny's Tues in MD. Finally!!!! You guys have helped change my act for the better and for that I definitely Thank You..Gaddy the Table is done and I'll post pics...gotta go take the parrots out... Bill |

OTOH, as I've seen from other posts by the pros on this board, some are complaining that the economy means smaller hats. Maybe "recession resistant" would be a better term!

I've also noticed that a lot of pitches are opening up due to businesses needing more draw to there shops.
in the down town area where I am living now in california the resteruants are asking the police to leave us alone. some years ago the resteruant owners passed laws to bann us from the area. when I was working the cops came to shut me down and all these resteruant owners came out and defended me, the cops were angry because the owners were the ones to pass the laws. the owners told the cops that they NOW need us because of the recession and that we are the only thing working to bring people down town. infact I am now working in an out door mall that for years was opposed to busking and even went so far as to make laws against it in the past, but now recently is even hosting busking festivals to try and attract more attention from tourists. |
