I got a lot of performers who have picked up stuff from me and people are calling them clones.
the truth is I am not even the original. my hero is sonny holliday. with permission I picked up a lot from him. when ever people saw me in the past people called me a sonny holliday clone, but now they can see the difference. I think in the future as my students grow into thier characters more promanently everyone will see the difference. funny thing when I first seen george years ago he was like a buster keaton character silent. when I saw him recently I saw hints of me and hints of eric evans.....but mostly I saw george because I know him. but it startled me to see him so out going, the george I always knew was a silent character and then bam! now he´s a super out going character. it just shows that even tho, yeh maybe he´s picked up a lot of habits from others he is very versetile. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS HE DID NOT JUST COPY SOME ONE OR THEIR ROUTINE. HE GOT PERMISION TO AND GAVE CREDIT TO THE ONE BEFORE HIM. this is probably one of the greatest things about george and the rest of my students is that they respect our art and tradition and believe in what we do. I love being around them and learning from them, they have taken my work and changed it and made it better and made it theirs. this is what I tryed to do with my teachers. |

Dynamike,
the best advice I could give you is to go to work.....now all day....everyday, and do as many shows as you can. over and over until working the street is natural to you and your street show is tight. thanks for getting the book I hope it helps you. I wish you all the best and respect you because you chose something I really believe in and has saved and changed my life. |

Jimmy, your book is great. It feels like gold in my hands. I bet there is not a better Street Busking book with as much needed information.
The only thing I was disappointed in was your autograph was not on any of the pages. |

Thanks for the kind words.
i´d be happy to sign it. the truth is that the book is not me, it is the acumalation of precious information from all the older vetrans and masters who have been working the street for years. granted I am living proof that they are right from living the examples and suffering the hardships, but the guys I have listed in the back of the book should be getting most of the credit. there is a lot more I didn´t list but they all know who they are. i´ll list some here as a reminder for you; jim cellini sonny holliday doug conn eric evans dante in new orleans tom frank "toot" riki palmer jerry salazar in frisco patrick kelly in georgia johnny balloons in new orleans and many many more thousands I know all over the world. these guys are real buskers. they are not on the internet using busker as a call name, they work full time, and have for many years. these guys don´t get the credit they deserve because their business is the street so you hear about guys who like to call themselves buskers but have other jobs or busk every once in a while and come on forums and tell us all how to do it. these guys are fun and entertaining here but I would suggest you go out and meet real ones. go to the street and ask them if this is their sole means of income. you´ll know who the real ones are because they are out there every day. gigs are great, I do as many as I can but when I am learning to street perform I learn from full time guys not just guys who have done it here and there and say they make a bunch of money and that´s the most important thing....because obviously they are doing it for the wrong reason. how do I know this form guys who have been doing 20 - 40 years who have told me so and from my years of experience. it is my hope that you will pursue being talented before you go after the money. money is good we all need it, but it´s a hollow victory with out pride in your work. DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND THE MONEY WILL FOLLOW. povide a quality performance FIRST!!!!! please don´t be another talentless hack just hustling people for money. i´m not saying you are infact i´m saying this to who ever is reading it. and if you do become like this don´t tell me, you know you are good because you are making big hats....i can´t take any more of this ignorance in my life. everyone that has told me this, has had a weak show that needed a lot of work. I wont give them away out of respect even if they respond here. but some of the worst performers I have ever seen had a great knack for making money which is good for them, but better for them and the magic community and the public (remember them?) would be if they would try and provide a quality product also. put your focus on being great. big hats are great and I know you will get them if you learn how. BUT bigs hats don´t make you a busker....your show makes you a busker. |

Xjesterx,
man it´s good to hear that. I get a lot of flack from guys who think busking is a "get rich quick" scheme and they don´t put enough work into their act. what´s scarey is that they can´t see that´s it´s assinine to look for riches in the street instead of, oh, lets say, investments or the stock market or other places where wise people with money go. personally I think people like this are just bad performers and deep down they know it. since they know it and think they will never have the ability to change this they instead focus on their abiltiy to badger people for money and feel satisfied that they have street performed good because they got the money. I meet them mostly in america but they are all over the world. in europe they recieve a seething hatered from the other performers but in the states many performers are so consumed with money and materialism and have never really seen a quality street act, that these extortionist performers are actually patted on the back. with this it is no wonder that the american public feels like a street performer is a con or another sales pitch. every single layman I have ever talked to has the same complaint about street performers, they say, "i hate when a performer makes me wait and wait and wait before he does the trick and then it´s not that big of a deal, it feels like a scam." then what´s worse is all the "performer" does is nag for money all through his "show" while providing amatuer skills and with little to no theater. well any way i´m ranting. there are also many performers who do not do this and the people would never have these complaints about them. BUT THE REAL QUESTION IS WHO WOULD YOU HIRE FOR A PRIVATE FUNCTION if you discovered them one day on the street? AND WHO WOULD BE MORE PREPARED AND QUALIFIED TO ENTERTAIN YOUR GUESTS? NOT SOME HACK EXTORTIONIST TIME SHARE SALES MAN, THAT´S FOR SURE YOU WOULD WANT AN ENTERTAINER. would you want some guy doing this to your guests? AND BELIEVE ME THIS TYPE OF EXTORTIONIST PERFORMER WILL HAVE NO STAGE TIME WITH A REAL SHOW BECAUSE ALL OF HIS TIME HAS BEEN CONSUMED LEARNING HOW TO BADGER NOT ENTERTAIN. yeh I get like this in the morning before breakfast. any way who ever is reading this stuff thanks for the interest. your pal jimmy |

No I appreciate it I get a lot of flack and it´s nice to hear people who agree with me now and again on the forums.
out here in the real world the full time buskers don´t argue with me much because here we are living it, you know. it seems no matter where I go in the world, some big name guy or less known busker who has been doing it for years thanks me for sticking up for their way of life and telling the truth instead of pitching a "get rich quick scheme." many of them have told me they don´t bother writing on the forums because they get sick of argueing with these guys. they also make many suggestions what I should write and that´s a lot of what you have been hearing and a lot of what inflames some of the guys that go after me for telling what we believe is the truth about what we do. it´s a great feeling though when these guys stop me or come looking for me, it just means I get to learn a lot on the work sight. sometimes it kinda bothers me when some one recognizes me from the internet or youtube or something and doesn´t recognize a master I am standing next to. but in a way it´s nice for me also because I know my work is being appreciated. but I always make it a point for everyone to know who the master is on the pitch if this happens. my life would be a lot easyer if I could tell you their names because this would shut so many of my critics down flat, but like I said they can´t be bothered and have asked me not to mention their names, because then it would give them my problems. and some of them I just don´t know well enough to go dropping their names. I don´t mind doing this stuff for them I feel like I am paying them back for what they have done for me. a lot of times I put them on the who´s who blog I got wether they like it or not, after words they always thank me any way. this season I have accumalated a lot and this blog will be filled up this winter when I find the time. I really believe these guys should get the credit that they deserve, but being street guys you don´t get the publicity Copperfield does. fact is i´m not that good, guys like cellini, sonny holliday, eric evans, gazzo and nick nicholis are so good sometimes I feel like I am wasting my time. hell my students are getting so good I can´t keep up with them. but I am just glad in my life I got to be apart of and contribute to this work. your pal jimmy |

Chad thanks!
oh nick is gonna get HUGE play on the blog. to me he is exactly what a real busker is. not just to me but on every pitch he stops on they all say he is a real worker with the lifestyle. the magicians respect him as a real artist, and as young as he is he has already seen a lot of the world and worked it. he works the first, the second and third world, because he can. he is living the lifestyle. he is an artist and a traveller. I have a lot of stuff to do with the blog, but I need more time off to do it. but I promise you I will. thanks chad for keeping this thread up and keeping the community sticky going. my goal is to beat the one at the top with views and replies that no one wants in our section. I am hoping that the powers that be will be kind enough to give us a sticky if not well at least the beginner will know they can go to my blog to learn. I am just happy that we have a forum like this so everyone can learn more about our art, industry,a nd ourselves. |

No problem Jimmy,
There's a lot of important information in this thread. It should be mandatory reading for new buskers. Yeah, Nick's stories are great. He makes me wanna go out and weld a couple of old bikes together. Ya need a tig or mig welder for that? I think it's a tig. I gotta look into getting me one of them. |

they are talkin about Nick W , "the american magician from thailand" (yea he's busked in the 3rd world) . . He's a cool guy who also used to go by the name "Nickey Robot". He travels the world pretty much just on a Tall Bike that was given to him from a friend.. |

Hey Jimmy, funny story for you. I was playing in a little town in southern Germany the past weekend. After a show, a guy came up and invited us (my lady and I) to the local `Monthly Magician Meeting', that night, in a local restraurant. Restraurant?, sure!, that sounds like a free meal! We showed up,.. ate,.. then talked a bit about playing the `streets'.
One guys asks,"My cousin sent me a book from America, by Jimmy Talksalot; is he a `Star' over there, or something?" "Yeap", I said, "right after Britney Spears and George Cloony,..Jimmy's big time." He knew I was pulling his leg. But then he asked a funny one. "That name, `Talksalot', is he Polish?" !!! Hey, I told him how to find you on the Internet,.. that one he can ask you himself! all the best, gallagher |

I'm sick and tired of that clooney always bummin money off me. you'd think he would have made a few bucks with those movies he did. that britney is always embarassing us back home in louisiana. we always try and put on a show to the out side world that we got it together....and there she is just puttin us out there for the whole world to see. I usually tell people talksalot is english not irish because it's one word..... |
