It used to be said a cheat would get himself shot if he gave himself four of kind. In Holden though I see on the square coolers occur quite often. These are a couple classics though:

Guess they should have used marked cards...then they would not have gotten burned
Oops...that would be cheating....not allowed.

I once played a pot in hold'em with ace rag. The flop comes blank ace ace. I check and my opponent checks. The turn is another ace which means I made my four of a kind. My opponent bets and I just call. River comes up king I check, my opponent goes all in. I call and he turns over his king rag to show aces full of kings - the highest possible full house. I of course win with four of a kind.
Another time another guy and me were all in pre-flop, me with a pair of tens and him with a pair of kings. Flop comes blank blank 10. So the other guy has only 2 outs now. The turn comes a king - he makes his set and leaves me with just one out. So that's one card out of 44. I hit that last ten on the river to make my four of a kind. A real roller coaster hand. Both times there was no cheating involved - and no one even came close to suspecting cheating. If you look at the second hand, had we not gone all in pre flop it would be a perfect hand to make him lose all his money once he hit his set on the turn, and it's the kind of hand that people would say that if you are a cheat and you set up for yourself everyone will suspect you of cheating. But I guess if you play a lot of poker you see it all and if there's no reason to suspect cheating - no one usually will. Of course if things like that happen every hand people are likely to get suspicious. |

It's hands like those which make the game exciting and fun (at least for the winner)

The two biggest beats I ever took were on good strong full houses that I miscalculated to be the nuts. Somehow, when you've got your Lucy you can't picture someone else going that far with a low pocket pair. Then they're sitting there with four and...you just don't see it. I mean, I didn't see it. Twice. I should have marked the cards. But that would have been cheating. Right Jeff?

I think in the old days of Draw and Stud you would not have seen so many square cooler hands come out as they do today in Holdem. Them community cards in Hold’em cause big hands to come out together more often. What I mean is, I think you have more chance of putting in a cooler these days without the big hands arousing as much suspicion as they used to. The notion that you will get shoot by giving yourself four of a kind is a little out date now we have Hold’em. Still I have had a running flush and been beaten by higher one in a casino cash game and you do automatically think cooler when it happens to you even when it is not. So I guess it’s best to stick to the old rule even if it is happening more often now.

In my part of town the highest hand of the bad beat would get far less than half. Is it different in your area, iamslow?
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.
