Note: I know there is another thread on Kockov and includes this DVD but it is about a set and I don't have the second one as of yet. I'm only reviewing one of the DVDs as you'll see.
Title: Plunge Of Death by Kockov Medium: DVD Arena: Mentalism Parlor or stage Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies Warning: The two routines presented on this DVD have a very real element of danger that can result in serious injury or death. Not for use by individuals under the age of 18. Kockov is the mullet haired character created by British performer Jasper Blakeley. This is the first time I’ve seen Jasper out of character and was surprised by the difference between the stage image and his normal self. Kockov is very funny and is a mentalist from a former Soviet republic. If you ever get the chance to see Kockov perform do so as he does a very entertaining program. The Plunge of Death consist of the title routine and also a Russian Roulette routine using revolvers. The production level of the DVD is pretty good. No problem with the filming or the sound. You see Kockov performing the routine and then Jasper sits down and explains the routines. If you mess up either of these routines you will either be seriously injured or dead, if you use the revolvers, so if you do get hold of these DVDs you accept the risks. The Plunge of Death is a Russian roulette type routine that many are familiar with, that being a spike under a paper cup. The props used are inexpensive, common every day items, and are funny and functional at the same time. They also fit the Kockov character but should be able to be worked into many others performances as well. There are many methods out there to do this type of routine and the one presented is the most straight forward and safest and to me that is a good thing. When I do something like this I use a similar method or use the No Chance dice. The benefit of this method over the No Chance dice is the spike can be in any position while with the dice you need the cup in a specific position. This actually is the best version as far as items used, simplicity, and safety, that I’ve seen. Believe me, there are methods out there that people use which are not real smart at best. I go with smart. The second routine makes use of four pistols and reminds me of the Maurice Folgel rifle routine. I don’t know how Maurice did it but I know it isn’t the same method. This routine has more components to it and can really be played dramatically. You can re work this to use other items other than fire arms, be it acid some other substance or even the old spike routine. Lots of play area. Again, you have to be careful because if you mess up you could be injured or killed depending on your choice of props. Jasper again goes with the simplest and safest method of accomplishing the routine. I knew what he was up to but I certainly appreciated the performance aspect and how it was routined. If you are looking for Russian roulette type routines and want to go with a method that reduces the risks this is a good way to go. Compared to some other versions that were released in the last couple years this is much easier. I enjoyed the DVD and I will be switching my method to this one as it gives me more room to work. A nicely done DVD by a talented performer. |

I lied, when I saw 'set' I thought it was two DVDs in a package, I do have the other DVD (sold separately!) and will review it sometimes in the next couple weeks.
