I know several great jugglers who are clueless when it comes to entertaining an audience. An unforgetable juggling act is one that puts on a great show, and simply doing great tricks is missing the point. In order to be a successful juggler you need to have a personality, stage presence, a sense of humor, a head for business, an understanding of costuming, and most of all entertainment value. There is all the difference in the world between the skill of juggling, and the art of juggling. If I'm missing something here please feel free to add to my list of requirements.
MY 2 cents Al

Hi there,
I agree with what you are saying Al, and I would even go so far to say that, from my experience, a performing juggler does not necessarily need to do a lot of juggling! I would certainly say that standard audiences aren't very interested in the clever stuff, they would much rather see things that look clever or dangerous (eg. juggling knives). It's a bit like with magic. I have always had the opinion that the manipulation side of magic is a lot more interesting to fellow magicians than it is to a standard audience. I think the same is true of juggling. An audience does not really care about the difference between you juggling 6, 7 or 8 balls (or whatever). I agree with what you are saying Al, and hopefully this has added a little to your initial comments. If anyone disagrees with anything I have said, please feel free to discuss it further! I think this could turn into a very interesting debate! Take care and God bless! Magical Mark Watson (mark1991)

A very smart man once said to me....It's now what you do, or how you do it, it's why you do it.

As a clown school graduate what is your opinion on costuming, stage presence, style, and presentation?

McBride said on one of his dvd's, "An artist can make the difficult look easy, but a showman can make the easy look spectacular." These are good words to remember. The easy can be very entertaining with the right showmanship. The difficult is not very enjoyable if the performer is biting his lip and concerned with his next move, more than he is connecting with the audience. Of course when a person becomes an artist and a showman, that is the total package.
Al, I think you are right. Too many focus too much on the artistry, and not enough on showmanship along the way. It IS more than just a bunch of tricks! |
