Hi there,
I am looking into beginning some basic hat manipulation to enhance my juggling act. Could anyone suggest the best (or their favourite) juggling/manipulation hat for a beginner to learn with? Take care and God bless! Mark Watson

Go to http://www.trickswithhats.org and if that is not enough http://www.Dube.com and buy "the jugglers manual of manipulative miscellanea" by Reginald W. Bacon "Mr. Slim". The IJA had a video by Andy Head too. Al

Mark,
You've already heard from Little Paul (of Tricks with Hats fame) on rec.juggling. For others reading this. It depends on whether you want to use a real hat or a specially made hat. Real hats are lighter and are shaped so that you have to land the hat in the right place. Juggling hats are heavier and more circular making tricks easier. The best juggling hats are Nils Pols and Dube. The best real hats are bought very cheaply from charity shops or suit hire shops when they need replacing. Buy a light hat and blacken it yourself. Nigel Don't use cardboard hats or plastic hats unless you really want to struggle.

I spray the inside of my top hat with a clear lacquer spray so I can juggle it.

Some great resources.
Also there is a good video from Andy "Head" on Dube's website(and on other websites as well) I have to make my own hats for juggling. I get them from china and then do the add-ons myself. I use different hats but the main ones I make for hat throwing/scaling. |

I don't particularly like the Andy Head video. I prefer the 'Urban Tumble' video by Dan the Hat but it lacks detailed instruction. Probably the best instruction video out for hats is by Little Paul (of http://www.trickswithhats.com fame) which can be bought via download as well as on video and DVD. A trailer for it is on http://www.juggling.tv. I should search out the link for you but I'm being told to move away from the keyboard.

I saw the new ringling bros. show and they have a great hat juggling set with about 15 people involved. Scaling, juggling, back flips, human pyramids. It rocked. The whole show was pretty good.

I like the Nils Pol hat. It's heavy (3 layers of filt) witch makes it easier to manipulate. And there is a lot of colour combinations.
I do agree the video of little Paul is great. (trickswithhats). |
