What are some of your favorite sites for the newer fun stuff that scientists are thinking up and Magicians should be aware of? Sites with novelties are also wanted. I'm just not sure where to look.
Thanks Dave

I found some fun stuff at the following site:
http://www.teachersource.com/ I ordered some crystal gel stuff...this is the stuff you can pull from an apparently empty glass of water and produce ice They have lots of other scientific type stuff to play with although I wouldn't describe it as "cutting edge." Hope this helps. jeff |

here is another site that has some good chemical reaction Illusions...
Does anyone here have practical experience with this sort of illusionism? There is a certain routine that I'd love to do, but I don't know all of the chemical reactions that are used and need a resource... thanks in advance, Gaddy

I have done hundreds of shows that involve chemical reactions for a local science musuem that I worked for 4 years, I even did week long summer camps that evolved an insane number of chemical reactions.
What would you like to know? Mr Tim, the Science Guy |

Mr. Tim,
I'll PM you with the specifics... These are easy reactions, I am sure... I just don't know what they are! G

Does anyone know where to buy chemicals? The one site mentions potassium, where do you pick up potassium?
I've got an idea for a trick that requires sodium in powder form, but have no idea where to pick it up. Just curious if any of you knew. |

You can get chemicals from http://www.elementalscientific.net/
they used to sell Potassium metal, I do not see it in their catalog right now, I do not know what happened. They still sell sodium metal. Sodium is a metal that quickly oxidises on contact with air, I do not see how the powdered form of sodium would be all that useful for anything. All the applications for sodium or potassium that I have seen call for small chunks of the pure metal. These metals must be stored in mineral oil to keep them away from water, including water in the air. Over time these metals build up a layer of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide if any water works its way into the oil they are sitting in. Tim |

Safety advice from a chemist: I would strongly recommend NOT trying to get your hands on potassium. It reacts violently with water - and there is plenty of moisture in air that you're sure to get a reaction before you want it to.

I also highly recommend SteveSpanglerScience.com, especially with Summer Shows coming up. He has special packs for teachers which have all the equipment, etc. in 30 head increments or so -- perfect for the outdoor party crowd.

I am publishing a dvd and book regarding science entertainment using items that we can find from home. They are big and showy illusions/demonstrations. 80% of the items you will find in a typical home/garage. The effect will be described as well as combining items into a smooth running routine. It will be a resource for teachers, science enthusiasts, and magicians to supplement their income.
