Okay everybody. This is a request . . . with a few provisions.
I uploaded a new demo video to YouTube at http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZEb5dsr_SJM. I am looking for feedback on the video, as I have never done one of these before. I am not, however, looking for feedback on the actual routines performed in the video. For instance, the sub trunk footage was from the 1st time I performed it live, and unfortunately, it is the only good footage I have for now. I plan on making a new video at the end of the year, and should have all new footage from holiday corporate events. I am looking for suggestions on good possible additions to the video (i.e. video testimonials, street magic, voiceovers, etc.). I am also looking for what the best length would be, and whether mine is too short or too long. Does it look professional, or simply like it was strung together by an amateur (the video, not the routines lol) . Finally, does this look like something that would appeal to a primarily corporate crowd? Thank you all very much in advance for your assistance. And by the way, feel free to give that video a good rating if you would like to. Thanks! Kevin Viner

Remove the period from Kevins link and you get this http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZEb5dsr_SJM
Here goes..... Hello Kevin, I didn't rate your video because in this case ( when you are looking for opinions ) its best to get real reviews and not pad them with high ratings. So far you have only 2 stars so that sort of answers your question as to if the video is working for you. I'd shorten it. Its too long and needs to focus on the payoff of the effects more so the viewer doesn't have to sit through the entire routine. They are watching it cold and not warmed up to you as your live audience was. I'd cut the shot of you tossing the marker on the floor. If you are not happy with the sub trunk performance then why include it in the video that is supposed to highlight you? I'd cut that down as well. A voice-over Narrative from a professional speaker describing you would be a benefit here as well. Crowd shots of people enjoying the show should be added and maybe have some text reviews fade on screen over the images now and then. Something like...(" Entertaining Show!".. ACME Corp ) More closeups of you would also be a benefit. Best, Tim |

Hi Kevin,
Glad to have been of any help. Its only advice and it may or may not be for you but it never hurts to toss it out when asked for. LOL Good video clips are so hard to get. Keep shooting all you can and eventually you'll get a good enough collection to make a great demo. You'll note I don't have a recent video on my site that represents my current market. I am waiting until I have enough footage to make one that will sell instead of tossing up a partial one. Best, Tim |

Drake stated "Crowd shots of people enjoying the show should be added " this should be number one, you are selling entertainment so show the folks being entertained.

Kevin,
I mostly agree with Timothy's post. However, I'd actually say I don't think your video is too long. It's that it FEELS too long. I've produced videos that are much longer, but after watching them, you don't feel like they were that long. Creating a video that moves without being "too" fast or even too slow is a fine art. This is one reason I advocate getting a pro to cut your promo video. The physical act of capturing movie clips, assembling the clips around on a timeline and exporting a final product isn't beyond the ability of most people (especially with today's software). However, telling an effective story that captures the attention and draws them into your story is the difficult part. The most difficult thing for a person editing their own promo video is that they are too close to the project. They know so much about the routines, they love certain elements of a routine and they want to show off many things. Things that may seem "cool" may not be visually dramatic. One example of editing and understanding how to sell a product (that is, your service as a magician) is the fact that the last thing on your video is the client list. This should be placed MUCH closer to the front of the video. Show it off. Things like client testimonials and client lists and audience shots will sell you better than anything you say about yourself. Scott |

Here is a question for you to answer. Would YOU hire you for the salary you ask for the job you want to do? Seriously would you? If so then great. Be honest.
I personally don't like the shot in the confrence room. Although it provides the only audience reaction on the whole thing, it is really out of context and always strikes me as not a great looking video. You are trying to tell someone that their audience is going to have a great time, showing people having a great time is a wonderfull way to do it.

Thanks again to everybody for their wonderful advice. I'll try and get some video testimonials from people at the shows, and hire somebody to professionally edit the video for me after the holidays.

You definitely need a voice over. You're trying to sell me something without saying anything. A picture is worth a thousand words.
A good voice over is worth a thousand bucks. Also consider doing the same video in both male and female voices. -Robert PS: This is a personal thing but I'd suggest losing the Bowling Ball vid (if not the entire routine). REASON: I've never seen anyone pull the routine off without looking (and sounding) like they're trying to take a dump on stage. It really has become one of the most awful pieces of magic anymore. That's personal and frankly unsolicited. But that's me. Your show. Your call.

I will second what Rob said. Scott is a good friend of mine and I have known himfor years. I can safely say there is no one out there that knows more about video and video production for magicians like him. Hands down he is the best around. Not only that, but he is a great and friendly guy who will help and offer assistance to anyone who asks it of him. That is rare in this day and age.
I do a lotof graphic design and print workfor magicians. However, when it comes to video and video production, I send all my clients to Scott. My clients are happy and that makes me happy. Kyle

Kevin I know this isn't really feedback on you video but what is the name and artist of the song that plays throughout most of your video. They have been playing at an amusement park I go to for yeas and I want to know what it is called.
Thanks |
