I've worn glasses since I was 10 but now my vision is getting worse for reading. I am nearsighted. I know they make bifocals without the line and all that. Have any of you gone from regular glasses to the bifocals? If so do you like them? My wife swore she couldn't see with her glasses and 'had' to get new ones. She goes out and spends $1500 on glasses and won't wear them because she isn't automatically use to them. So what do you bifocal types think? I'll also take comments from parents of you youngunz that wear them.

No line progressives is what I wear, better than trifocals. I can see far, medium and reading. Takes a few days to get used to them. Be careful walking down stairs.

You really scared me with the title of this thread. You should get bifocals only if you want to read. To loose your hair, eye sight, waist line, blater controle, ability to walk on your own, virility, and much much more is all coming get used to it, because the alternitive is worse. I am about ten years older than you and you don't want to know how many ways my body is disappointing me.

I never heard of trifocals. If I can get use to them in a few days, which I understand even though my wife doesn't, I'll do it. I can't read labels on anything now and I when I read books the text has that fuzzy look. I may also have to get a hearing aid, that is due to being caught on deck during a bombardment on a battle ship.

I have used bifocals for a little more than a year now. The first problem I had with them was while I was driving. I couldn't see the instrument panel without having to move my head. I got used to that in about a week. The second problem I had was going up and down staircases. I got used to that in about two weeks.
All in all, I'm darn glad I did it. They eliminated a lot of hassles trying to read, which is something I do a lot of. As for the vanity part, well... I'm a stunner with or without them.

Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

1) - Shame on you for that title.
2) - My bifocals, progressive or lined, have been a pain. Always gotta hold your head at juuuuuuust the exact right angle to read, watch teevee, use the computer. And, no, "computer glasses" like they try to sell you don't help. I'd rather just move them back and forth on my nose until the focus suits the activity, and turn my head any which way I please. BTW, when did (as at most stores) "$99 a pair" unfailingly work its way up, every time, to $200-$300+? AFTER insurance? |

$1,500 for a pair of glasses is quite a large fee. If you are a AAA member you can get 30% off at lense crafters. I bought three very expensive pair for about 1/3 that, and one pair was rayban sun glasses with custom lenses. You probibly would save money by flying to Pennsylvania and shopping here.

My progressives are also transitions, they turn into sun glasses.

I've had both regular bifocals and transition bifocals. Each has its advantage. The transition gives you a broader range of focal lengths, but if your primary use for the bifocal is to read at normal length, they have a much narrower field. I wear transition for everyday use, but have a set of reading glasses made to the the fixed length reading bifocal for reading more than just a short bit. $1500 is a bit high for transition and photo gray bifocals. I've never paid more than $300 for them, and you can get them for about $160 across the border.

I used to be terribly near sighted. I wore glasses since I was about 8 years old. I switched to contacts when I turned 18. I wore my contacts every day and eventually had to get reading glasses. I got a pair of bi-focals for the times I didn't have my contacts in. It took a bit to get used to, but as others have said...it was worth it. Eventually I got tired of the contacts and decided to have my eyes LASEKed (That is the correct spelling. The procedure is different than LASIK.). Anyway, that got rid of the need for bi-focals. I would have the surgery again in a nanosecond. I don't need glasses anymore, but I still need reading glasses. $20 from RiteAid or Walgreens. Can life get any better? I submit that it cannot.

The $1500 was for two pairs of glasses. The transition ones and her sunglasses. She has refused to wear either, amazingly she can now see with the old ones that she couldn't see with before. Al, I didn't know about the discount at Lens Crafters, I don't know if we have them here where I live but I'll check.
So the vote is the glasses take some getting use to but after that they are okay, except for Ross who doesn't like them and was hoping I was into dudes. My dad got the bifocals without the line (is that transition?) and he hated them and went and got regular glasses. Man...I think I'll have to get my eyes tested and see what can be done. |

I told my wife to wear her glasses, she is, she also told me that transition, the word I used, is wrong and hers are trifocals. I don't even know why trifocals are used. Maybe I'll just quit reading.

Trifocals allow you to see far away, close-up, and medium distances. I have two sets of reading glasses. One for books and another for when I'm using the computer. I can't see either without my glasses, but there is enough distance between the two that I require two prescriptions. Most people just require the two lenses while others require three. My wife has the transition lenses (no lines)while I had the bifocals with the lines. We each liked what we had. She hated the line, couldn't (read wouldn't) get used to it and went with the transitional lenses. I got used to the line, because I couldn't justify the additional cost. Took a little time, but never was a real issue, for me.

Thank you. I think if I need the reading part, which I'm pretty sure I will, I'll go for the bifocals w/out the line, and regular sunglasses. I appreciate the information folks.

Santa , I am with AL, you scared me with the title of this thread, and with you being a navy guy I did not know. Any way one caution with glasses that turn into ssunglasses. They wont work in your car as your windshield has UV coating on it and that is what changes your glasses from light to dark. You can use this knowledge to check the efectivness of your sun block by taking your glasses and putting sunblock on one side and see if the lens changes to dark. if only one does your sunblock is working.

Hey Hey Hey sailors do live in close quarters, and are persued by silly fellows in every port ( I think it's the uniform), but I spent three years in the navy, I kissed a lot of pretty girls, and I only ran into one, or two swishy sailors that kept to themselves, because they were out numbered.
Santa How about the great American eye company where the give a good price for an exam, and two pair of specks, or For Eyes. Don't they have any large eye glass chains out there in the desert?

Bionic eyes. It's been tried it in the movies and they work.
