Hah, you're not going to fool anyone with that old Jedi mind trick. Will everyone please look at this red light right here?
...so we were talking about Bobo's, and can anybody do that Bertram copper/silver transposition where you swap the coins by touching your fists together under the cover of some unspecified misdirection? I actually know one guy who does it this way, but I've never met anyone else who even tried it.

Hi Curtis!
I use that Bertram move for several things. I have, as you know from another post, problems with certain tricks like the coins across. However that does not stop me from working on them all the time. In 1978 I was at a convention in San Diego and Earl Nelson did a coins across for me at 3am after a lot of time at the bar, so you can imagine my state. I awoke the next day with the following recollection: Earl showed me 4 coins in his left hand and an empty right hand. He closed both hands and reopened them to show that one coin had gone across. He did it again, and again, and again, and then he was done! He never counted the coins in between transpositions, he never did anything except make a magical gesture, shake, or something, then open and close his hands! That's my story, and I'm sticking to it! All of that is by way of saying that I figured out a way to duplicate that effect, and it uses the Bertram move you mention above in a derivative way, as well as another principle. I have been doing this coins across since 1978 and fooled most every magician and layman I've ever showed it to, so the Bertram move can be really deceptive! There are some slight handling changes that, for me, affect the way it looks - if they really have a Café Convention I'd be happy to show it to you... By the way, having mastered the move one way, so to speak, the next step was to try all the effects Bertram used it for - so yes, I do the transposition as Bertram did, and it looks pretty good! Best, PSC

Eureka! I knew it would work. I have to see you do it for an audience some time. I'll trade you. I used to do my version of "Bertram's Best" tell me you do that one, too.
I recall seeing Earl Nelson do that routine. He did have a way with that move. That routine eventually ended up in "Variations" didn't it? Do you do anything else that's hidden away in print in Bobo's?

Hi Folks, I get the feeling that the potential of the glass in pocket routine with the rigged jacket has yet to be tapped.
The coins travelling up the sleeve and arriving in the glass is a strong premise. Taking off the jacket and having this happen is tempting.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

PSC and Curtis,
Regarding the Bertram move you mentioned, is that similar to the one in Stars of Magic called Passing the Halfbucks? Another similar move was in a marketed sleight of hand effect with 4 Chinese coins called The Travelers by Dai Vernon sold by Tannens. If we are talking about that move, then you found someone else who does it and I use it all the time in a coins across effect. Judging by the spectator's facial expressions, my experience tells me that this move is very deceptive. I always get a great reaction when all the coins wind up in the unexpected hand. |

My Favorite Bobo routines? Wow where to start. "Coin through hankerchief", "The Touch of Midas", "Three and Three", and "Coin through a ring". One of my favorite utility sleights is "the Instantaneous Coin Change". Oh yes and more of an exercise than anything useful is "The Esscee Front and Back Manipulation". Anyone else worked with this or am I just a glutton for punishment?
BTW, doesn't Mike Close use that Bertram move in a routine as well? Jason |

The move PSC mentioned is a bit different from the other Bertram move, but they are certainly similar. Yes, renouned card man Mike Close does the move we were talking about, but I wouldn't hold that against it.
The SC move is a beautiful thing, but like you, it turns out I have practiced it only for its own sake. I used it on stage a few times long ago. Jason's selections are good ones, I think. Jason, are you talking about the sleight-of-hand coin through ring, or one of the gaffed versions? I like the staging of the sleight-of-hand version, and it occurs to me that it may make a nice lead-in to the Vernon version of "Expansion of texture" done with a ring, called "All Sound and Fabric" in the Inner Secrets series. WOW, I really do like that idea. See ya!

Yup Curtis the Sleight of hand version.
I hadn't thought about the lead into Vernon's effect....but now, hmmm. Well off to the laboratory! Jason |

Jason, I tried it tonight, and it plays very well. There are a lot of staging issues in the Bobo effect, and I've never understood why both the ring and the coin are on the same side of the hank at the end. How do you do it? When you start, is the ring and coin assembly above the hank (and visible to the audience) or below the hank? If below, would that be a good time to steal/switch the ring out?
Let me know what happen in your lab.
