Just want to vent here, hope you don't mind. I need to talk.
Well, at our school which has an advanced Self Guided Learning program, we depend on our Learning Guides and our work as well as textbooks. I keep these, along with a ton of other items of importance such as cards, Ninja Rings, Cups and Balls, and many other magic props in my large school duffel bag. Anyway, I put it next to me for no more than two minutes to show a crowd of people a Cellphone Prediction effect (card fairly chosen, after attempting to find the card the magician finds that the wrong attempt cards are actually spelling out his phone number. Spectator calls it, and voicemail says the name of fairly chosen card). Anyway, I look down and my bag is totally gone! At first I thought it was a joke and someone had moved it to another pert of the school lobby as this has been done many times before. However, I search the lobby and find nothing. I search the hallways and even outside and find nothing. I interrogate onlookers briefly and find nothing. I sign out of class to search the whole school twice... and find nothing. My bag, which included about $200 of magic effects plus all of my crucial schoolwork, has been genuinely stolen by a school student. I don't know why anyone would do this, but they did it. I went home without it. However, I just found out from a source that the culprit was a frequent spectator of mine who wanted to play a joke. Well hahahahaha, isn't that the funniest thing ever!!! Especially when he gets grilled with the Theft Report I filled out and the two people who hired themselves to be my personal hitmen. Sweet revenge. I do hope I find this guy and get my bag back tomorrow. I literally couldn't survive without it. And that's my story. Feel free to comment.

Why...in the name of all that is holy....do you carry all that stuff with you to school? Did you miss the whole 'less is more' idea about magic?

It's only Cups and Balls, Ninja Rings, two ropes, coins, three decks of cards, and a chain!

Nonetheless, I'd put the screws to him, at least for a while - what a jerk!

I wouldn't even bring a deck of cards to school.... why not get naked, paint yourself blue, and jump up and down in your quad during lunch screaming "look at me! look at me!", it is the same thing man.

The same thing happened to me. Only I wasn't at school, it wasn't magic props, and nothing was taken.
How were you dressed? Maybe you were asking for it.

Excellent point, so what do you wear to school? I'm betting on neon colored tux covered with rhine stones.

Pretending your not a magician all through school will add to your coolness.

Yup, that's it. If you don't remember that movie where the cool kid entertained the others with magic, there's a reason. There is no movie like that. Ditch the beret. Pick out a popular celebrity that you look like. Style your hair like them and wear outfits that look as close to theirs as possible, with no variation or embellishments. Pay attention to their shoes! Talk as little as possible. Hang out with kids that do the same, and do whatever they do. Don't do it better or with your own twist.
I know it goes against every thing that makes sense, but that's what popular kids do. The kid took your stuff because you are different and he didn't respect you. No one pointed out the theft for the same reason.

A beret and all black. Man this is one messed up kid. If I was a kid desperate for attention in Canada and not wanting my name listed with the Mounties (like Michaels is I'm sure) I'd go to school all year in Bermuda Shorts and Hawaiian shirts. On test days I'd put that white stuff on my nose and wear sun glasses.

Whoa. Hey, take it easy...
I'm sure none of us ever did anything weird when we were his age! I distinctly remember wearing parachute pants and "members only" jackets (although I wasn't really a member!). I had a friend who wore cowboy boots with swimming trunks. MagicSanta, we're about the same age and grew up in the same part of the country. Can you honestly tell me you never pushed up the sleeves of a suit jacket a la' Don Johnson? That being said: Michael, it is rather important that you not misdirect yourself and allow people to do that sort of thing to you! Think of it as making sure all your "angles" are clear. Also, knowing when to start and when to stop is one of the best things you can learn from doing impromptu magic. Don't worry. Nobody sprang fully-formed from the earth knowing all the answers! Everybody makes mistakes. |

I think he was kidding about the black beret and all black outfit.
I can't say I never wore anything stupid. I may have worn some camoflague pants and a pink oxford with red Chuckie Taylors once or twice back in the day. But never a beret. Never a beret. I think he was kidding about the beret.

Showcasing your talent, and showing off is a matter of perception. Don't most of the girls in school hate the prettiest girl in your class? If I were you I would not do magic in school, but that's just me. Most of my old friends think that I am crazy, but most of my old friends have no life.
