I googled the name of the hypnotist in the story. No hits. Must not do promotion or have many bookings. And of course just becasue it something is reported doesn't mean anything happened, or that it happened as reported. And if it did a lot of questions arise:
1.) Subjects history of mental illnes PRIOR to show 2.) Drug/Alchol use before show 3.) History of prior legal claims It is important to remember that even if the outcome is as reported, was it really related to hypnosis? Guess those are questions that will get sorted out by the civil court. Hope he/she had insurance. Would love more details. Like hospitalized for what?

I don't think it even needs to be dignified with a responce. Obviously the problem was not hypnosis, but rather the way he dealt with what went on. By which I mean the publicity.

I guess he must have badly fluffed his wake up procedure. Either that or mass hysteria broke out because one of them didn;t want to wake up straight away.
Any thoughts on why he would have got this result. Anthony

I am with Danny, not all press is good press! In this case it is bad for all of us.
Anyone ever use a puff/blow of air to the eye when a subject is hard to wake up? I have once in clinical practice. Eyes popped wide open, then re-orientation.

That is an old old school technique, as those youngsters say. Glad to hear you used it. Do you understand why that subject was hard to wake up?

Actually its not obvious it wasn't hypnosis. Not to the general public. All you need is a run of events like the one mentioned above. And the market will suffer. Word will get round and bookings will drop.
To be more accurate it was the hypnotist. Hypnosis like a gun is inanimate and has no effect without the person using it. And if more and more are entering because of high profile marketing of training aids then the likely hood of it happening again increases. Plus it makes a great headline story the media love it. In fact it already has started now there are other cases that I am aware of appearing worse than the above. And also there are the rare subjects who won't wake up with any of the techniques mentioned above. Not dangerous but potentialy embaressing and damaging to hypnosis market. Sounds like a few chickens are coming home to roost. |

Sorry Nongard, I will rephrase that. Can you tell me why they were difficult to wake up?
Thanks Anthony

The fact (sorry to confuse you with the facts) is that NOBODY CAN BE STUCK IN HYPNOSIS. NO WAY NO HOW NOT POSSIBLE. So it was that particular hypnotist who had a problem. I guess I am lucky as my market has never been Utah anyhow. God lets all panic. For a bunch of guys who supposedly know about the human mind, please look up sociology and the term "mob mentality" and get back to me.

Becasue it feels so good to have the eyes shut, why open them. And with this single client, my first count up was too slow and quiet, and he continued to go depper perhaps based on a prior suggestion he would go deeper when I counted. So I gave him a minute to enjoy and complete any mental processes he was working on then did an upcount in a very directive manor, blowing on the eyes at 3. He loved the session. Other reasons clients don't wake up: They are actually asleep, they still have experiences to deefine in trance, awakening has no change of rythem, tone or tempo, and a myriad of other things.

Looking for extra attention being the number one reason.

The sky falling out Danny? Whos being dramatic? I can't believe none of you have come across sleepers that are more difficult to awaken. I said there was no danger other than possible embaressment and bad publicity.
Yes of course the reason these cases are coming into the media attention is because of the increase of newbie hypnotists generated by mass marketing of training programmes. There is absolutley no doubt about that. And to say stage hypnosis isn't dangerous in the wrong hands is a bit more than naive. Its dangerous for a number of reasons because of the inability to manage certain situations. Due to limited or bad training. There are a couple of other cases going on right now in your part of the world. That actually sound a lot worse than the one above. I don't spend much times these days online in these areas. But I have come across them by accident Im sure you must know about them. Looking for extra attention? Nah I just like proving a point. Go on and delude yourselves a bit longer. Of course Richard is going to be biased and deny any possible problems. Although he isn't that bold as to suggest this case won't be bad for stage hypnosis. Three cases now coming to light. Im sure more will follow. |

Yea sky is falling.
The point about new hypnotists having problems is true. The implication that they need proper training to deal with this is true. BUT you can get rid of 99% of all of these problems with a proper opening lecture. Suggest in the lecture it can not happen and guess what? It won't generally happen. But again it comes to trainig.

Sleepers difficult to awaken....thats a big problem if you learned from a weekend course.
Anyone with real training just doesn't seem to have that problem.......
