As it's been a few months since I've picked up a book (Josh Jay's "Sessions"), I'm in the mood for something new. If anyone has thoughts on the below, I'd appreciate it.
I'd like something that's about cards or mostly cards; is well written and with a personal and engaging style (i.e., not a dry book of card-trick recipes); and which mixes theory and thoughts on card magic with the effects and sleights. I like Josh's book and also "Dr. Mister Fantasy" a lot. I've also been working my way through "Mnemonica" and like that a lot. I'm thinking of Aaron Fisher's "Paper Engine," Eric Mead's "Tangled Web," or Pitt Harding's "Card Fictions." I'll probably get all three at some point, but which one first? Or, does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks very much for any thoughts anyone might have. |

My humble opinion is Pitt Hartling's Card Fictions.
My other recommendation is how about Cardshark by Darwin Ortiz, Steve Beam's Semi-Automatic Card Tricks Vol. 1 - 7, Duffie's Card Compulsions and Duffie's Effortless Card Magic? Tangled web is good but mostly discussed about the psychology to perform, not much about card tricks, if you want many tricks of card with the deep thought and theory better buy : card fiction - pit hartling ..

Pit Hartlings book would be a great choice. I would also consider Tyler wilson's book "Dominatricks".
A very entertaining read, although not a strong on the theory.

I recommend Harry Lorayne's either Personal Collections or Classic Collections, I bought personal collections from him directly here at the Café.
Excellent books and I personally like the way he writes Pablo |

Hartling, then Mead.
Whenever I find myself gripping anything too tightly I just ask myself "How would Guy Hollingworth hold this?"

Another vote for Dominatricks by Tyler Wilson, funny, well written, lots of great routines that are new and original!
Though, Hollingworths 'Drawing Room Deceptions' is a really good read as well |

Best book on card magic (apart from the obvious classics) - classic magic of larry jenning - it has the *** word classics in the title, now that's classic.

Get the Lorayne Classic Colllection. For someone who wants to learn card magic they should study the classics and not only the latest book on card magic (including my own).

ASW: Right after How To Develop Super-Powered Know-It-All, or How To Develop Super-Powered Big Mouth. Not sure of the title yet. Oh, and modesty IS becoming a drag! I prefer TRUTH. So, to repeat - SOME of the above are giving excellent advise. Of course, MagicOft may not agree with that (but most people who know - DO - at least that's so among the many who have called and emailed me about this. HARRY LORAYNE.

For the record, Harry, I have several of your books as well as some of the others mentioned here, like the AOA set. I was sort of in the mind to purchase a smaller, less omnibus-style book that would explore one person's thinking and and performance philosophy mixed in with their sleight work, hence the three choices I initially proposed. But thanks again, everyone.
