I, too, received my order. I agree that Magic Enhancer has put a lot of work into this effect. The supplied hank is well made, and the plastic liner makes it very similar to one I purchased from Hughes Magic, which is also of the square pocket variety but has a plastic, easier to clean lining.
I must agree with much of the constructive criticism regarding the recorded routines. My initial impression was that it was going on too long, that it continually slammed the magician, etc. However, if Kobi will simply record a more traditional version of the routine, in both male & female voices, and include ALL of the routines on the cd, then the performer could choose one that is right for him. As for what Keith has stated about the proper construction for the hank, maybe Kobi can take that under advisement. However, the cloth supplied is well made, the fabric is pleasing to the eye and would be suitable for may types of acts, not just clowns or children's performers, etc. Also, this style of devil's hankerchief has been sold and used successful for some time. However, until someone comes up with a better devil's hank, I'll be using this one. Chris |

ALCON,
Thank you very muc hfor your insights regarding this item. I always strive to improve upon things, and make them better. Because of your constructive criticism ,I am able to do just that. Allow me to tackle this point by point. (1) Customer Service. DMM, You said that I did not respond to you ina timely manner. I saw you wrote me an e-mail at October 23rd at 10:04 PM EST. You wrote your above post on the nxt day at 11:33 PM (almost 24 hours later). I try my best to get back to my customers as timely as possible. I can usually do so within 48 hours. I work long hours, travel frequently (for business) and sometimes it's hard to get back to you all right away. If anyone has difficulty getting to me, my phone lines are always open at 917-459-2048. I wanted to nip that in the butt, because I believe I provide great customer service. I just don't want that to be an issue of why people wouldn't purchase one of my products. (2) Returns. As most magic effects, I need to be careful of the return policy. If you bought this effect through other means than my web site, you must go to the retail outlet for a return / refund. As for returns directly to me, it is a touchy issue. I will say, however, that if something is defective, then I will exchange it with no questions asked. If the Cd does not work, I will send you a working copy, etc. As for a full return, I will deal with them on a case-by-case basis. So, DMM, please send me an e-mail letting me know exactly what you did not like about it, and we will talk offline about it. I have tobe verycareful about taking returns. Especially when it comes to pirating of media. DMM, I am definitely not accusing YOU of anything, but it is just something that retail shops must be careful about. I'm sure many of you will understand. (3) The Devils Hank. I appreciate the many compliments I have received with this. Sandra Sisti from SEAMS LIKE MAGIC did an EXCELLENT job puting these together for me, and I couldn't be happier. Of course, there will always be a performers personal taste which factors in. I tried to choose a color and fabric that will accomodate most of the performers out there. As I've previously mentioned, when creating a routine as involved as this, there is no way to make evrryone 100% happy. If I would have made the Devil's hank green, other people would have wanted it blue. Hehehhe. I personally like a darker blue fabric. This color and fabric (I believe) suits all types of magicians and performers. Additional hanks WILL become available over the next few months with additional designs, etc. I will offer a good discount on customers who have already purchased this effect. Personally, as well as others had told me, I believe the Devil's hank is worth the entire price of this effect. Other Devil's Hanks go for roughly $5-$65 and do not have the removable pocket insert. These have been used by myself through dozens of performances, and are top quality. And, clean up is now easier than ever because of the parachute-lined, removable pocket insert. You squich the banana in the insert, make a mess, take it out, put a new bag in (they will be available shortly) and you're ready for your next show. The removable pocket inserts are dishwasher and washing machine safe (the velcro will not get ruined- in fact, they claim it gets better as you wash it). Wash the spoiled one at your convenience and you're ready to go again. Keith, I have used this type of design for a while now. It seems to work fine and I never have a bulge. Let me know how yours works out. That is some more info on the hanks. If anyone has particular questions, please let me know. (4) The tracks. Once again, I ran into th same problem creating and writing the scripts for this (with help from others). Not all jokes will suit every performer. The length of the routine will not suit all performersm etc. I tried the best I could, and believe that this routine is funny. Tons of gags, laughs, etc. I purposely recorded the script without additional background music. Many people told me it would add to the value, but I chose not to for one simpl reason- A performer COULD (if they wanted) delete certain gags or jokes they did not like from the script. If I had background music playing, it would be near impossible to do. Sure, it is a little extra work, but many of us know someone who is able to do it. I would even do it for my customers as a service (minimal fee) if they wanted me to. I couldn't re-record the script, but I can definitely edit it. I think the longer script will work well for performers. I've performed this bit the same way for over 5 years. It works for me and had always gotten tons of laughs. I agree that it MAY be too long for some performers, but you will always have an option to edit it to your liking. Many of the jokes are independent of each other. I hope this clarifies some of the concerns posted by our fellow Café members. If I can be of service to any of you, please let me know. I look forward to working with you all. I learn a lot from you all and welcome any advice or criticism you may have. Thatis how we learn and grow as performers. I will be out of town these next few days. I will try my best to live up to my 48 hour "someone will get back to you" policy. Have a great night everyone! Until then, Ciao. Robert

This is a very popular trick that I personally feel was just made even better. The tracks on the CD give you so much more versatility to perform it, or other effects on the cd, for different audiences based on where you are performing. The devil's hank design is really great and allows the performer ease of clean up. It makes it so simple to clean it out and if you do multiple shows in the same day, this is simply ideal.

For those of you looking for an alternative to the audio-based routine have a look at page 82 of Harry Allen's book 'Sleight of Mouth'. Harry has a lovely routine which uses a stooge who is taught the colour changing bandana trick by the magician. The stooge stands behind the magician so that the magician cannot see what is happening and uses the same idea as the Vanishing Bandana trick, except it uses a large bucket of silks with a banana mixed in and no devil's handkerchief. The trick eventually works after the usual messy mix-up. The routine can play as long - or as short - as you like and you can personlise it with your own jokes. The book was originally published in 1995 (so predates the vanishing bandana trick I think) and has recently been republished by L & L. The cost is $20 and has a huge selection of very funny jokes for magicians. One of my most thumbed books!

Hi Robert,
Thanks for being so open and available on here to discuss the trick. - My one concern : does your new version really concentrate on the whole "bandana" / "banana" confusion thing (which, as discussed, is the basis for the whole situation being funny), or did it get lost in the shuffle of all the new gags? |

Ken,
Unfortunately, there are no yellow bandanas included in the first run. Somebody forgot. He did post that they'd be sending a gift coupon to the purchasers. It was supposed to be a yellow silk. I'm taking a 12" silk and using a marker to design it like a bandana, though. Steve |

Sorry Ken, misunderstood your question. It's used in the conclusion of the routine. Without giving away the entire ending, that's all I should need to say.

I use yellow silk to end my routine when I open the hank the silk flys out(basically changing from a bananna to a yellow silk). It is not this ending is it?

Ken, the ending involves finding the "bandana" in the box at the conclusion. In truth, the idea of confusing bandana with banana in a comedy act goes way back to vaudeville. I think the idea of using recorded instructions came originally from Tom Ogden. Then ALLEGEDLY, Copperfield used it without permission, and so goes that open can of worms.

I posted this on a different thread....just found this thread so here goes.
I guess I'll be the first to say, I'm not 100% happy with the new version. I feel the routine is now way too long, for my tastes. While the new version does have some very good moments, especially a motivated ending, which I like alot, I think some of the bits play way too long, including the lead in music. Also, while some of the updates are entertaining and funny, I think at some other parts the narrator is just...rude and annoying. As far as the construction of the devil hank, the idea is great but the construction, again, less than pleased. The removeable pocket, on mine, is white while the hank is blue. So, while folding the hank to create the pocket and while squishing the banana, you have to be careful not to flash the white pocket. If the white pocket is flashed, this causes a discrepancy. I used it 3 times this weekend and the banana "juices" bled through to the outer part of the hank which I thought wouldn't happen with the material of the inner pocket...but it does. The outer hank is now discolored and will have to be replaced. As an aside, a yellow silk is supposed to be included, which I didn't receive. This, however, was not really a big deal, as I have more than enough yellow silks laying around. I will say that I have gotten some good ideas on the script and the construction of the inner pocket that I didn't or wouldn't have thought of myself. I can/will use these ideas to tailor the routine to my liking, so that was a benefit. But on the whole, not happy. This is the first time I've commented in this section. Patrick |

So here is the a question for you all. even with some not so perfect things.... is this in your options the best bet to go with for this routine?

Was permission from the original creator of this effect retained before this was put on the market? (if it was, I apologize in advance for this post)
Many on this site bash other companies for doing such a thing, why not this guy? Sorry KobiHasOneEye, I really don’t want to put you down or have you bashed, just want to keep things fair, clear and consistent for this site. |

To my knowledge this trick has a long history. some obscure and I am not so curtain anyone holds the "rights" to it. like the cups and balls for example, the concept is just plain old as heck =D
I could be wrong. another thing is that its not a direct copy of anothers work, as another product that I'm sure you are aware |

It's not? A box, Devils hank,a bannana and a recording, sound the same to me.
Again, I don't care. But if that "other" company had made this I know you would not see it the same. |
