I realise that Lassen & Schoolcraft coin work is the elite of all gaffed coins and I respect that, but cannot afford it (just yet). Instead, I'd like to purchase a Johnson (or comparable brand type) at the moment to see what would be best and to practice until I can afford the elite brands.

I am looking for a Walking Liberty SHELL and/or a Morgan dollar SHELL. I have 4 regular coins of each and 1 set of each being tarnished/"soft" and another being shiny/"hard". In other words, I have a total of 16 regular coins. I rather work with a tarnished/"soft" SHELL, but can also utilize a shiny/"hard" SHELL.

I am looking to purchase a Walking Liberty SHELL for $30-$50 and/or a Morgan dollar SHELL for $50-$100. Is it possible to get a fairly good quality SHELL at this price?? Will it fit fairly well on a regular coin (not too tight or not too loose) and the face has not lost too much of its engraving (upon the expanding process) when compared to the other regular coins while performing for the spectators?? Would the spectators notice the face being less engraved on 1 "coin"??

Any thoughts about the quality of SHELL coins on Roy Kueppers' Website:

Anyone willing to sell their SHELL(s) (maybe now you can afford the elite ones and can pass it onto someone that was in your situation earlier), please PM me.............

Thanks

Salby,
Listen man. Everybody's on a budget. I've got Johnson shells, Kuepper shells, Tango Shells and Flipper's, etc. Just ordered Lassen Morgan Shells and coins. Got Schoolcraft coins and gaffs too. CFWM too. In my opinion, it's too hard to quantify. But-If I was going to give advice to anybody-Go with the pro's right from the get-go. Don't nickle and dime yourself now, just so you'll end up with a bunch of junk sitting around in your drawer, as an experiment. Save up your pennies, buy the best from the coin gaffers and you're done with it. They'll last a lifetime and they're your's, made to your specs. You'll feel better about your routines, knowing that you bought the best and aren't dealing with junk in your hands. See my point? I've bought a lot of crap, thinking I was saving money, just to be disappointed, and then turning around and spending more money to compensate for the crap I bought. Buy the best, the first time around. You'll be doing both yourself, and your wallet, a favor. Just my opinion. And my experience.

Buy some of Schoolcrafts single shells and find some matching coins..

That is your cheapest and best bet.

I have the Johnson W Lib. E] and it is the same price as Jamie's single unit price! I just left Hollywood Magic and their Johnson Morgan E] was priced at 80 bucks.

Wow I use to get my Johnson Morgan E[ for only 60 bucks. I guess its because silver coins are pretty hard to find now.

There you go Mick! I love my Schoolcraft Morgan shell....but I just have to point out that the Johnson is great as a anywhere anytime shell.

The fact of the matter is silver coin gaffs cost $$. no matter where you get them they are gonna be 40-60 dollars with no matching coins

now that said avoid roy at all cost I had a order with him stand still for a wand a coin box for 4 months then finally filed a complaint with paypal and got a refund. from his own mouth he is concerned with his dealer orders and not individual customers. basiclly your nothing to him.

I couldn't disagree more. I have one of Roy's toonie shells. The centre insert had shifted slightly (it's a two-piece coin, gold inside of silver). I sent him an email on a Friday. On Sunday, Roy replied, telling me to send him the coin and he would see what he could do. I mailed the coin on Monday and got it repaired FREE OF CHARGE the next week. I can't speak to Joshua's complaint, but I was treated well above and beyond what I expected.

I happened to luck into a set of Johnson silver (walker and 64) shells that are IMHO very nice; however the prices I've seen since are about the same as the custom guys. With proper care a shell will last for years, so go for something good.
