So it seems more guys prefer a pump with a good stroke over blowing with the mouth...good thing we're talking about balloons here...

I have a massive problem with the inside of my ear when I try to blow up a balloon by mouth! It's extremely painful so I'm forced to use a pump. Anyone know what this could be?

Lou,
That's backpressure from the balloon pushing air back into you harder than you're putting it in there. All the airways in your head are interconnected. You have to be careful. I mouth inflate, and can do 400-500 a day before I start to get a headache. HOWEVER, done incorrectly, backpressure can even inflate your salivary glands, which (so I'm told) is quite painful. If you want learn to mouth inflate the BEST way to learn is:
Blow up a 260 all the way with a pump. Let the air out. Attempt to mouth inflate it all the way. If it's too hard, blow it up with a pump and let the air out. When it is stretched out enough for you to mouth inflate it, mouth inflate it all the way. Let the air out. Mouth inflate it all the way. Let the air out. Repeat this process until it pops. Obviously be very careful doing this. If you do this every day for a month, you'll be able to mouth inflate them with no problem. This method is from an Italian balloon book. I don't remember which one. Fantasy Balloons? Dream Balloons? Something in that series. Great books for a beginner to intermediate twister. |

Google brought me to this thread after I had a rude awakening trying to blow up a 260 Q. I've never smoked, and I consider my lung power to be substantial, but that little sucker whipped me!

When I first started, I would just blow a small 1-2" bubble .... don't aim for the fence yet. Once started with a small bubble, the rest of the balloon blew up pretty easily. Unless you need it for performance, most everyone (including the big dogs) today uses a pump. There are so many pumps to choose from (floor, hand, electric, etc.)There seems to be a trend that a pump is more sanitary for the recipient. I am happy to mouth inflate, especially when performing "Balloon Bag" , but prefer to use a pump for all of the modeling work. The simple hand pump works fine for most all situations. I tend to use me ancient T. Myers Pump O but also have a nice electric pump and hand pump as back ups.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to give in and get that pump. I have been trying and trying and I can't even get that small bubble you mentioned.
I am going to use the balloons in Dan Harlan's ballonatic routine from his pack small play big birthday party show DVD. The bad part is that the pumpless inflation is an integral part of the routine. I'm not sure I can redesign the routine to incorporate the pump. If I buy the pump and pre-inflate the balloons and then let the air out a couple times, will that stretch then enough so that I can mouth inflate them?

It is a good way to start yes.
Problem is it is about control. If I get time I will send you a You Tube link with some help Doug. It will be filmed in my basement so no laughing but it will help.

Actually it sounds like work LOL. For you. Takes practice but I can show you how and what to practice. Let me see if I can find some balloons, if not I will do it tomorrow.

Ok
I was shocked at how not cheap these things are! I bought two bags from a local retailer here in town. and she had to special order then in because she doesn't normally stock them. Well after shipping two bags ran me close to thirty bucks! And now I'm forced to add the expense of a pump. Just to add balloons to my show is costing me an arm and a leg.

Make sure you only buy quality balloons as it does make a difference. You've only just begun. Wait until you start finding unique sculptures that require specific colors ... then you build a much broader stock. You can also buy 260Q's in a 250 count mixed bag which sometimes is more cost effective.

From what I understand the Qualitex are the highest quality you can buy. The lady at the store informed me that it's not a good idea to buy too big of a stock because they disintegrate fairly quickly. Is she right?

I buy them 5000 at a time so get a massive discount. They last well, but you're talking years in a hit or humid climate. You need to be careful how many you buy and how you store them.
I use qualatex for modelling and Quality for burst balloons needed in illusions.

Most people try to inflate them incorrectly. You don't use you're lungs as much as you use your "bathroom muscles." If you're a singer then you know what I'm talking about. Inhale, bare down, and let it rip.

Make sure you stretch out the balloon well first and it becomes a lot easier, I've found a few times that it will start to get to hard again and I'll have to stop and stretch the rest of the baloon more. doesn't take more than a second, just pinch the top, grab the bottom and pull it out a couple times.

I think that blowing up a balloon by mouth, especially in a restaurant , is disgusting. Why would I want some strangers spit near my food?

Jakeg,
I go into restaurants three nights a week and blow up hundreds of balloons for kids and adults right at the table. People love it and often express how impressed they are that I can blow them up and twist balloons so quickly. The issue that so concerns you never comes up. This doesn't mean you're wrong. If that's what goes through your head when you see balloon animals you certainly wouldn't want them at your table. People do turn me down occasionally and perhaps in some cases they have the same issue you do. They say "no thanks" and I go to another table. Personally I don't think there is any actual health concern. It's just the "ick" factor based on how you look at it. |
