Smartini,
I hate to be a pain, but the way your post is formatted mixes your thoughts with mine and is confusing to read. Any chance you could edit your post and put in the "/quote" mark-up to separate your comments from mine? Best, James |

Just because you think educational magic is junk and is bad does not make it so. Even if the material wasn't taught fresh into the childrens memory bank, it at least refreshed their memory... Kindof like shcool. Every so many years in school I have noticed a pattern in subjects. We learn things in school that we have learned years earlier but may have forgotton some about. Then we take it a step further. I think that memories need refreshing especially with children. CHildren have to be constantly reminded of things in order to keep straight. It is just a fact of life! I think safety magic is a great way to keep childrens minds refreshed about certain topics that apply to real world scenarios. It could help them in the long run. And who is to say that every child has had public safety courses and lectures by their parents and teachers? Not many educational systems I have researched actually teach about strangers...drugs yes, but not strangers...and every parent is the good ol "Leave it to Beaver style Parent" who makes sure their child knows these things. Oh and sorry if you thought that I was insinuating that you were an idiot. I mean nothing of the sort. I was kind of smart alecky in the end and I appologize. |

Kyle,
don't worry about it...as a Smartini I can lean towards the sarcasm side of the pendulum myself...i agree with you that repetition is important and good for messages to take hold and for them to be understood at a deeper and more profound level...i'm concerned about the schools that don't teach about strangers...unfortunately, it's a dangerous reality that our kids just aren't safe and we have a responsibility to teach them to look after themselves...your story about the child porn sicko approaching kids around the school yard is exactly why...i know this is happening in my school district...while I don't agree with some of the routines that you mention I wish you every success with your magical/educational efforts smartini |

Thank you. And you are correct. It IS VERY sad that there are parents out there as well as schools who do not properly advise students on subjects such as abductions. Personally, I was glad to recieve the phone call and find out that everything turned out okay and that the pervert had been arrested. We live in a sad, sad, world where anything can happen and does happen. Many people think "That couldn't happen to me or in my community" but they have no Idea. I never dreamed of there being a child porno loving sicko in that quiet little town...but there was and he was rightfully prosecuted for his actions.

My turn!
I also do not believe that you have to go to College for 5 1/2 years to give safety messages to kids. I know several people who are not Teacher's who travel the Country giving Safety school shows very successfully. This isn't something that I take lightly as I watch on the tube more & more children abducted throughout this Country. I have gathered info from several Federal agencies that deal in this same subject. I.E. National Center for missing & exploited Children, National School Safety Center & National Child Safety Council. I have have taken a class from Pam Moody in ( Williamsburg, Va.) who is funded by FEMA to do these very same shows. I am a member of smileclowns.org who specializes in educated others to give Safety shows. For one I would NEVER use the word 'stranger' in a Child Abduction program as 86% of the abductions are done by somebody known by the child. The magic is used in the shows to illustrate your point in a way to grab the attention of the Child. If done properly, the child will remember your point better by this method than the typical 'teaching' one. For good references to these types of shows please go to. 1- Charlie check first 2- Smileclowns.org 3- Pam Moody- Yahoo or google it 4- Steve Taylor.com I will also incorporate Ventriloquism to the show. It will take me months before I complete just one show "abduction" due to it's seriousness. I now have it written out, I now have to go over it a few billion times.
Dad, magic, ventriloquism, facepainter & balloons.

Give me a break Sluggo. Can you rehash something from someone else...sure. My question to anyone who might hire you is why you? What makes you the person that they should engage when every other "clown" can read the same information and probably do it for cheaper? Safety for children is something that isn't for amateurs or those looking to make a quick buck. A safety message that is matched with a non-real show is completly the wrong way to go. End of message! |

Didn't check out sluggo's profile...but you're quite right in that he would appear to have an expertise in the area of fire safety

"Reading across Curriculum" has been stressed in our district for years.
Working in a school district, gives me access to a bit of credibility(sic???) but lack of spelling ability. Many of my summer programs(which many entertainers forget about) were at elementary summer schools. One Nearly Normal Program led me to a picture and caption on the K.C.Star Newspaper's entire metropolitan area. The next day I made the cover of a more localized Kansas City Star Neighborhood news. Sending out press releases as well as to schools can give you more visibility. Tim, since you are from this area, I know that you would put on a great show wherever you land. As a person who has seen a few school based programs, all are not up to your caliber. Be safe, well and have fun. Harris Deutsch Laughologist
