I just wanted to ask this because I have been wondering about it for awhile.
Do you use mentalism? If so, how do you present it in respect to the gospel? Do you use it as a "This is how 'psychics' and others trick you into thinking they have supernatural powers"? Or do you do it more of a "I don't have any special powers, I'm just reading visual clues that you're giving off"? Thanks for reading! Mike

I have a full mentalism act that is designed to be specifically presented to church groups(teen to addlt). I quit using disclaimers & I allow the act to speak for itself & no exposure is performed. If I said"I'm just reading visual clues that you're giving off" or "psychological principals" that would be lying something inherently wrong with that given the target audience.

I do a mind reading & mentalism program where I state that I really can't read minds but God can, these were just tricks. I then talk about the verse where it says "Let this mind be in you, which was in Christ Jesus." Then I ask the question, Do you have the mind of Christ? It starts with salvation!
Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand!

I'd like recommendations on which mentalism effects to perform for church groups, etc. If you can give specifics like the name of the effect and creator, that would help. It doesn't seem like there are many Christian magicians doing mentalism so I'm wondering, what works and what doesn't work for this kind of audience.
Thanks, Joe |

I've used both a headline prediction that was shared with me via the FCM in the UK and Devon Knight's Glass Box prediction (but not in the same show). Both went over very well and it actually leads to a very good ending. When I do these, they are usually my last effect before going into an altar call and I end them with something like this..."I may not be able to really predict the future, but I know of one that knows what your future is...Jesus Christ"
Devon actually had commented to me about my use in a church setting and thought it was good. |

We seem to discuss this question a lot. Here are some links. Seems I've been involved in a number of them.

You're welcome. I hope it's helpful. If anyone else is interested, PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send it along. It was written in 1992, but I think it's still relevant.

Mike,
If you regard mentalism as simply a branch of magic (as I do) and treat it as a performance piece whose goal is to amaze and entertain an audience, you can't go far wrong. The aspiration should be to create a unique mystery you can weave into some type of spiritual message that brings enlightenment along with the sense of wonder. Rarely will you risk any type of misunderstanding if your aim is centered in the art and not yourself or your own pride. Richard |

A great way to look at it Richard. I've never heard it put quite that way. By the way, your DVD's are all fantastic and I recommend them to everyone.

Thanks Richard. Although I don't perform magic much, when I do I'm either teaching,
preaching, or witnessing and my desire is to keep the focus on Whom it belongs... If you don't mind my asking, when you perform for churches, do you preface your act with anything or do you just perform? Thanks again! Mike

Mike,
My own style of performing in a church or Christian organization is to do one of my effects exactly as I would for any audience and then tie it in with some type of Gospel message. For instance, if I do a center tear and guess someone's child's name, I tie it in with how God knows all of us and how he loves us as his children. I might do the linking finger rings and then talk about the Trinity. Usually, when asked to do something, I try to come up with a new way to turn my effect into a message about salvation that is different than I have used before. Hope that helps. Richard |

Great input Richard, I couldn't agree more...(of course with your reputation, how could I go wrong...lol) but that's exactly how I go about it. I actually find "well done" mentalism lends itself to a wonderful opportunity to tie into a Gospel message of salvation, or other themes. I used an add a number effect this week in my program, powerful effect and tied it into a thought that "God's got your number", no one can escape from God knowing exactly who you are, what you're about, and the condition of your heart...
Personally I want to thank Richard for sharing... |

Thank you so much Richard. It is comforting and inspiring to know that someone so well known in the field of magic also uses it as a tool to spread the truth about Jesus!
Thanks again! Michael
