Dug this old trick out today. Yes it is simple and yes gimmicky but it will always have a soft spot in my heart as one of the fist tricks I ever saw I am wondering if anyone actually has an interesting routine for it? The standard routine is quite simple and works on its own with kids, but I am looking to add some depth to it to make it interesting to adults. Anyone write a good routine or at least patter for this little pocket trick?

Let me see if I can find the "Archie's Fun Shop Routine." About 25 years ago, James "Archie" Taylor of Archie's Fun Shop in Pasadena, Texas, asked me to write up the routine he used when he demonstrated it. It took a lot of liberties with the props. So I did a couple of tapes of him doing the routine and transcribed it just the way he did it.
He made these things for several years, once Franco quit selling them.

I have always just done the basic "poor man's cap & pence" routine, with the nickels penetrating the spectators hand (an ashtray or plate to catch them makes a terrific racket and the noise adds to the effect wonderfully)leaving a stack of dimes on the back of their hand under the cap. Pretty much the same plot as the one commonly used for the stack of quarters.
Phil Thomas of the original "Yogi Magic Mart" in Baltimore used to patter about having a headache and produce 2 aspirin tablets instead of the dimes.
Woke up.

DStachowiak has the same thought as I have about 'Cyclinder & Coins' routines.
In 'Carneycopia' there is a routine called "A Polite Penetration" that may be of interest to you. I just bought a quarter stack but I think I'm going to have try and find my old Nickels 2 Dimes now. |

John Cornelius has a great routine, I believe it was called "The Perfect Pocket Trick" Which was nickles to dimes transpo using one of those old squeeze type purses like these http://www.handiworks.com/pd_rubber.cfm

In looking at the square and round ones (and maybe the oval ones) there has just got to be a magic effect in there somewhere...maybe where a signed coin is placed in a purse and the coin purse morphs from one shape to another (and/or maybe from one color to another)...only to find the selected signed coin "remains" in the "current" purse...no matter what its shape. I dunno. Just brainstorming. My apologies for going slightly off-topic (i.e., nickels to dimes). I was really struck by a wave of nostalgia when I saw the purses. Thanks for sharing the link. Mike

OK guys here is a quick routine I have been doing for years. This gets the best response, trust me.
Bring out your stack of nickels ("N" from now on) loaded and ready to go. ( dimes inside the gaff) Set N stack on the table. Preferably a hard table top. Hold the cap ( the vanisher) above the N and call it a flying saucer. I tell them that the flying saucer will hover over the N and that the N will vanish. Put the cap over the N softly so it doesn't lock over the stack. I look up and say that the N have vanished. Old gag.. Pause, Sit back and act proud... "Now if I snap or wave the N"s will come back." Lift the saucer and show the N have returned. "See isn't that amazing?" So far just silly fun and games. No one take this seriously. Now for the good part. Place the saucer over the N and say "But if I push the magic button, (push down on the cap locking the stack in place) watch what happens" You are going to throw the dimes under your other hand. ( when I say throw I mean slide them out from under the cap with a tossing motion. I am right handed so I slide the dimes from under the cap into and under my left hand. toss them fast enough so that they see the flash of silver but do not see that they are dimes. The toss may take some practice. I act as if I am really trying to pull a fast one over on the spectator.) Now keep your left hand motionless and show the cap in your right hand empty. (when I show the cap empty I push the gimmick even tighter when I show it. Sometimes some of the caps don't lock very well.) You have made the Nickels dissapear. Most people will say I SAW THAT. You say "you saw what?" They say I saw you toss the nickels over and under your other hand. That is when you lift your hand and say,"Sorry those are dimes." The reaction will be huge. try it and see. PS. Afterthoughts. When you toss the coins from the cap to under your left hand and the dimes are safely hidden beneath that hand, start tapping the index finger of the left hand as if you are nervous about the situation. Almost as if you new you got caught. This adds tension and make the revelation even better. Once I lift the left hand to reveal I kick the dime across the table by flicking them. It ads life to the moment. This will become one of your favorite tricks if you try this..........Dean Dill |

I can attest to the power of Dean's "feke" method. We used to use this as the pitch at many of the magic shops that I have worked at over the years. I first saw Jim Pace do this at least ten years ago.

Hey Corey,
Glad to see that you remember this routine. This routine goes back to when I worked at Zeezo's magic Castle in 1981. Future Gold Medalist Joe Givan was the manager and he used it to sell nickles to dimes like no one else could. We worked commision and Joe's routine helped me add a few bucks to my paycheck each week. Jim

You are welcome Chris. I cannot remember who showed me that routine. It had to be 20 years ago. Jim, do you know who originated that bit with N to D's? I would like to credit them if you do.
Anyway I am sure Mr. Pace has the real work on all of the products in a Magic Shop. He has some of the best hands I have seen. See ya, Dean |

Hi Dean,
I do not know if Joe created it or not. But when I read your post it made me think of Joe behind the counter selling, selling, selling. As far as I know Joe did create it. Mr. Townsand, SS Adams still sells two caps with thier product.

The nickles to dimes that I do are some what like the scotch and soda behind the back move. I show the brass piece in one hand and the nickles in the other. I then say that I will put both behind my back and cause the nickles to vanish! At this time I put the cover over the fake stack and hold it in that hand. When I bring my hands up front and closed fist I open the empty one and say! see the nickles have vanished and when they say open your other hand I do so and they see the brass cover and when they say the nickles are under it I lift the lid to show dimes instead. And all the nickles have truly vanished. Ahum....
