Recently I have performed a few smaller shows where the audience has been from 40 to 100 people. If these events were dinner do's I have begun doing a little mentalism from table to table to introduce myself and have found this to be beneficial in softening up a few people who otherwise might not have taken part in my hypnotic selection procedure later. I know the preshow lecture goes a long way to doing this anyway. It also gave me an opportunity to identify a few people who had been hypnotised before and raise their expectation about what fun they would be having later on.
When I first started with stage hypnosis someone suggested that mixing magic (albeit mentalism)with hypnosis was not good because then you are no longer 'The Hypnotist' just a magician who does hypnosis. He thought it important to simply be the hypnotist. I tended to agree. However my recent experience has made me question this. Do you think there is any problem in mixing pre show mentalism with hypnosis? Anthony

I sometimes use magic as a way of building rapport and meeting people pre-show. I have no problem being know as the magician, the hypnotist,or the entertainer.

I use warm up acts for theater shows. In general I am quite old school and am not seen before the show.
BUT have discovered people for some idiotic reason like me. The environment I usually find myself in I don't do pre show work. BUT when people see me and talk to me, say hello, tell me of another hypnotist they saw or liked and so forth, it builds a relationship from the start. They are already laughing and having fun and now "that is HIM!" is being wispered. I purposly keep my jacket off so there is a difference when I hit that stage. It really works. Now for my own reasons I never do magic or mentalism before the show. Maybe a convincer test like the fingers comming together, but never magic. I don't like the idea of "that was a trick" associated. Just me. I will say that if you do that people will often ask you the difference in mentalism and hypnosis, and if you get busted on the mentalism, good luck with enough credability to do a good hyp show. I did comedy magic once to open my own show, and I used the transition line, "What you just saw was tricks, what you are about to see is real". Kind of helped.

I NEVER do magic or mentalism as "pre-talk" ONLY in a club before a show, perhaps as I am sitting around waiting or just for fun. Likewise, I NEVER wear my stage clothing (jacket) anywhere but on stage, and at a STAGE hypnosis show, I would never dress in anything less than a tie and jacket - guess I am old school too...... I like magic, I like performing. I am old school in magic also. I NEVER perform new tricks to public groups, I practice a thousand times before I show anyone and have been doing the same 6 tricks for 20 years. Perfect and flawless every time.
Sometimes it is funny to see people respond whaan I am onstage, "Hey, that's the guy that was in the back an hour ago, doing magic!"

Thanks for your replies.
that's two self confessed 'old schoolers' who have mentioned 'jacket management' as part of their success. Something to test immediately;) Anthony

I agree with minderX, I have also found that using magic in a hypnosis show as a selling point can improve your chances of getting booked when meeting planners are choosing between various hypnotists.
