The sad back story is this: Two years ago my gas grill crapped out and I never got around to replacing it. I was looking for the "PERFECT" combination of portability (I have no use for "roast a whole pig" sized barbeques), convenience (that means gas) and price (yeah, I'm a tightwad).
Wal*Mart came through with an end-of-the-season deal, a CharBroil wood-fired combo grill/smoker...for $40!!! So, it gets lower marks on the "convenience" scale, but what a difference it makes on food. I used it last night, slow-roasting/smoking some dry-rubbed chicken (garlic powder, sage, oregano, salt, pepper, achiote powder). It gets no better than that. Yes, I live in SoCal, about 18 miles from the Santiago Canyon fire, so go ahead and crack wise about the irony of lighting up during a firestorm. But a man's gotta eat, paisano, and besides, it was already smoky outside, so my little grill was barely noticed...except for that delicate scent of garlic, hickory, chicken, and beer Leland |

Yeah, I thought 40 bucks was a great deal, until I came across a flowerpot grill that can be made for $10!!!
Mother was right -- if I get two of something for a nickel today, they'll be givin' 'em away tomorrow... |
