OK I have this routine that I am polishing for a full evening show on march 21st. I need a name for it.
So the curtains are closed. I have just finished demonstrating my side show skills and the audience is in a non serious mood. I pause a beat and say. "now on a more serious note. many years ago, long before the days of the side show. magicians had a much different role then they do today. Mankind attributed everything which they couldn't understand to magic. for example the sun, a giant ball of fire that kept us alive would rise and fall every day. And the moon a giant rock in the ski, would keep us company at night, and this giant rock would change shape. Some people say that magicians are here to remind us of our past." The music starts and the curtain opens and I go into my zombie routine. The zombie is a skull which I manufactured myself. I am looking for a name for this routine and feedback. Thanks Jonathan

You could always call it "Skulduggery."

I like the use of the skull with the zombie technique. I think you could carry on the story with reference to how shamans sometimes had sacred objects like skulls that gave them their power, or consulted them as oracles. Implying that this was such a beastie would give a possible reason for its behaviour. You might even be able to combine it with some sort of prediction routine, claiming that its movement is how it communicates with you since its tongue is now long gone. Is "Tongue Long Gone" too strange a name?

hahah those are bolth beutiful names.
I was thinking that the reason why I will be useing a skull is because it would be a likely object a shaman would use. The reason why it is floating is not because it has power but because I give it the power. I am useing the skull to demonstrate my powers as a magician. The skull I made has so much more potential then the zombie ball I bought several years ago. It can rest on top of the foulard with the teeth hanging over the edge and then suddenly lean back 180 degrees then you turn around and they see the zombie stareing at them upside down etc. So many possibilities. Since there are no skull zombie balls on the market I was thinking about makeing a few more and selling them to members of the Café. This is a project I wouldnt be able to take on right away and all the skulls would come out a bit different but if anybody would be interested let me know. Thanks Jonathan

David, LOL. Actually, Jonathan, I seem to remember you're a bit of a Shakespearean actor yourself. Why not check out Hamlet's poignant thoughts as he handles the skull of his former jester, and use some of them in your presentation? Make your audience think a bit, and help them to sigh that strange 'memento mori' sigh.
Now I'm off to bed. So goodnight my sweet princes. Caleb Strange.

Well, it's a sad day for Ovation Magic and Side Show (that's what I'm going to call my show). You see, here I am 5 days before a talent show and I get the news that I am not allowed to do anything with fire.
The above routine was going to be candle lit. Can you imagine how beautiful that would've been under candle light? Well, I don't think they're worried about me lighting the school in fire but they thought that if the audience saw 2 canldes on stage then the audience would panic. So I guess there goes my bizzare atmosphere. Not to mention, the first 5 minutes of the show were strictly choreographed and use lots of fire. I'm going to go to the director of our school and ask that the use of bunson burners in chemistry class be outlawed as well. I am very upset. I wish you all good luck and hope that you don't encounter these problems as I have. Jonathan

Illusionist,
I'm sorry that you are dissapointed, understandably so. Unfortunately, the Rhode Island nightclub tragedy has had other institutions focused on fire safety. Might I suggest though, battery operated or plug-in electric candles may work, as well as funken rings in place of flash? Think of this perhaps as a way to REALLY be creative given your constraints. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised at your ingenuity. I hope it works for the best. Dave |

The night club tragedy was exacly that, a horrible tragedy. What bothers me is that my school has no problem with using Bunson burners in the science laboratory. I took a class a few years back in crime scene investigation and we did an arson experiment which involved blowing up a house (2' by 4'miniature house) with a bomb made from a few c class rocket engines and we burned down another house to compare the rubble.
Don't get me wrong, both these experiments were carried out with extremw caution. It's just the fact that I showed the directer of my school how an Inviso Torch works and how a torch to cane works and she OKed it before the tragedy. Seance - What is a "funken ring"? And thank you for the advice. Jeff McBride once said during his lecture, "Giving constraint forces creativity." Jonathan

Dark,
Seance beat me to the post. I would also suggest checking with Spencer's Gift for the flaming oil base things. They are cloth flames blown by air and are lit. Just an idea... WR
