Andrew was kind enough to send me a preview of his new ebook "Cardbox Meltdown" for review. And I am pleased to report that this is a very good effect! Some of you may know Andrew from his enthusiastic posts hre on the Café regarding card magic. Wel, his love of card magic and attention to detail really shine through in this manuscript.
Here's the effect: the four kings are removed from the deck and placed aside. A card is selected and signed. The card is placed between the four kings and this packet is placed inside the card case. The card case is sandwiched between two halves of the face up deck. The card case is then flicked from the middle of the deck and one face down card is now seen upjogged from the middle of the deck. The card case is opened and the cards are dumped out. There are only four kings. The face down card is turned over; it is the selection. I don't think my description does the effect justice. It really does look as if one card pops right out of the box when you snap it out from between the cards. This is a very good effect. However, it should be noted that the title is a bit of a misnoner. The card doesn't appear to "melt" through the card case as much as it seems to "pop" through. I think melting implies a slower event. The hadling is simple and very well motivated. The effect requires no gimmicks and is totally impromptu. The pdf is well written and contains very professional illustrations. The only issue I had with the text is that there were two sleights mentioned for which could have used a little more detail. Andrew plans on marketing this pdf to intermmediate card guys so he assumes you know the sleights. That is certainly a valid point, but there is very little detail as to how these sleights are to be implimented in the context of the routine which is very important. I got it after a minute of playing with the cards but I think a little more detail would have been helpful. Andrew tells me he plans on selling this trick as a stand alone item for about $8. Not a bad price for a solid little piece of magic. This would make a very good opener for any signed card routine as it's quick and visual. Don't know exactly when it will be available but here's his website: http://www.freewebs.com/cardicians BTW, I should also mention that Andrew's credits are extremely detailed. Very nice job with that!

Hi Andrew, glad to see you getting Magic out, just curious, was this inspired by Doug Edwards? He has a similar effect in his book 'Packs a Wallop', though they do differ slightly in effect

Hi Chris,
I have sent you a PM. The entire routine is different from Doug but I did give credit to Doug as his routine inspired me to come up this routine which a combination of other various plots. His initial routine is involved with transposition which I thought an excellent routine but in my version, I applied this routine into another level which involve more cards and the plot (not transposition) is a card seem pop out or melt visually from the card case. The use of the card case for this effect should be credited to David Britland. It was published in 'Equinox' under the title 'Lunch Box'. The book was published by Martin Breese in 1985.

Just in case, I received many emails asking me whether this routine can be performed with any deck produced by your own country, etc, yes, this routine is very flexible as it can be performed with the use of various decks and of course, with a card case.
Thanks! Best, Andrew Loh Check out my new card magic eBooks "The Magnificent Queens" & "Triple Charms" at: www.cardicianden.com My Cardician Den Blog: http://pasteboards.blogspot.com/ |

I enjoyed the pdf, it's clear and quick. I had to research Elmsley's ATFUS move though, which I love how deceptive and to the point it is to laymen. Anyone know more variations of the move besides Marlo's?

Hi Crimson-Death,
Thanks for the compliments. Yes, there are many variations which I know perhaps you can find the following might be useful: 1. TATFUS (Andi Gladwin) - Can be found in his notes "Sometimes It's Hard to be a Cardman". 2. ATFUS Variant (Jason Alford) - I am not really sure perhaps in one of the Jason's Freebie notes? Perhaps someone can clarify with me? Really appreciate it. 3. No Fuss Switch (Jack Parker) - Can be found in 52 Memories. That's what I have for now which I extracted from my brain database, if I have more, I will list the number of variations in other threads. Is there a performance video of it?
For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, none will suffice.
