I have most of my promotional material made by an online print shop. They are currently printing 2500 post cards, full color BOTH sides for $119.
You can't beat them and their quality is excellent. For 2500 business cards full color both sides is $65. And to double it (2500 more) is just $10 more for a total of $75. http://www.onlineprinthouse.com I have all my promo material in color now. They have great prices on brochures etc. also. Hope this helps someone out! Gsidhe, that is a great idea of the picture post card . . I love it!

Unless grandfather is the chairman of the board, I don't do children's birthday parties. However, I give plenty of business cards away to children. Many still have them years later. They do ultimately get enough into good hands. I see it as a good investment.

Another fun idea to play around with is creating not business cards but trading cards. You can create cards of yourself or your rabbit or birds etc. that are in your show and have them designed like baseball trading cards with fun facts on the back. This way it is something a child will want to have and may want and encourage trading to collect the full series.

Ken: DOAH!!! I just turnd 38 and you know what they say about what goes first. lol Sorry about that Ken. I must have nissed it. Me bad. At least we can say that good minds think alike. =)
Let me ask you this Ken. Has the trading card idea worked well for you and what kind of reactions do you get from it? I have designed them for other entertainers but have not done it for myself.. yet that is. I think it could be a really fun thing for the children if it has some fun value for them. Perhaps the back has a maic trick they can learn or something of that sort. Kyle

I don't think that's a good idea. They will not take care of the business card and they will just throw it away.

I have not used the trading cards a friend has and told me about his. I think it might a be a neat idea.
On another note. The little plastic trading card sleeves that you buy like 100 at a time are great to put signed cards or even a business card in. Once they go into those sleeves they become more valuable to people. Ken |

Ken: Thanks for the information. I have a photo shoot of my wife and I that I am working on with a friend of mine (professional photographer). I am talking with him about setting up shots that I can use for a possible trading card series. I figured I mine as well be thinking that way if I am having the photos taken now. I may set them up and design them this winter so I have them for my 2008 season. I would like to try them out and see how they work. I think a combination of a trading card (different ones) with a fun trick or fun fact that the children can do on the back, would be something fun for them that they can 1) relate to and 2) want to keep and 3) would want to try and collect the entire series. I will keep you posted on this.
I would like to ask what ideas people have that could go on the back of the trading card? What fun things could be there that could engage the kids attention. Kyle

I agree that giving kids business cards is a bad idea. I did even worse. I stapled them to wrappers of my puzzle giveaways, meaning that the cards didn't even make it to a pile of the kid's junk at home; they were just tossed on the schoolroom floor . . . Now I do fliers for parents and teachers, and it gives much better results (put a flier in each kid's backpack at day care/nursery schools and you have a bonanza of publicity).

I don’t give a business card to a child, unless…
that child can sign a check and has a large trust fund. If I were a parent and my child brought home a business card, I’d sort f resent the guy who wanted to get to me through my youngster. Figure out what kids of the age you perform for really want and treasure, and invest a substantial amount of money in procuring those items, have your website clearly printed on the giveaway if you wish. But, deal with the parents, teachers, or librarians when it comes to business and bookings, they are called “business cards” for that reason, not “play cards”. I think it’s great to leave something of value to the children, I think it’s a necessity to present a gift to any child brave enough to join a performer on stage. Make it something special and meaningful, not an advertisement, the adults will appreciate that and hire you back and refer you to other adults (or children with trust funds who can sign checks). My thoughts anyway, Walt |

Kyle-
As far as the info on the back of your trading card- If you do school and library shows, maybe some info about the first magic book you ever read; favorite author (magical or none), or some tie-in to your show's theme. For other markets- maybe fun/funny "statistics" like your bunny rabbit's name and/or age; fastest trick you've ever done; age you performed your first magic show; first or favortie magic trick; largest audience you ever worked for; and TV appearances or celebs worked for... When I was a kid, I spent way more time reading the backs of baseball cards than looking at the front. I can still tell you the middle name of most of the NY Mets from the early 1970's... My favorite part of the cards was the little cartoon on the backs of the "Topps" cards, with the fun facts about the ballplayers. Consider those as a possible jumping-off point. If you don't know what they look like, PM me and I'll send you an old one from my collection. (This offer for Kyle only, please!) Terry Parrett |

Hi Terry,
Thanks so much for the ideas and great information. It is very much appreciated. I just had our photo shoot done and I got my 8 8 by 10's all set up and tests run off on my new photo printer. they came out great and have already started to serve us well. We took a lot of different shots and I very well might extend the shots and carry them over to a trading card series for kids. Make them fun and something thwey might want to hold on to and make the backs fun for them with maybe a simple teach a trick or some fun facts that you mentioned above. I would love to see some samples if you do not mind emailing them to me. It is much appreciated. my email is: magic4u02@aol.com Kyle

Instead of business cards for the kids, I give out coloring sheets that were mentioned before. Here's how to get some great ones produced: I had 2 created for me by Angel Contreras http://www.art4clowns.com at Kidabra. He also did 2 great full color drawings for me, all for a very reasonable price. You can see a sample of what he did for me on my website http://www.xakary.com). All he needs is a photo of you in costume, along with a phone conversation about the kind of drawing you want. You get the drawing electronically, which makes it easy to use in a variety of ways, with full marketing rights for the images.
I had Angel put my website on the coloing sheets, so unlike a business card that can easily be lost by a child, your name and contact info may end up permanately on a future client's refrigerator! You can easily print them on your laser printer or favorite local printer. |

I give out Fortune Telling Fish. I completely ignore the fortune telling aspect of it for kids, but rather tell them the plastic fish magically comes alive in their hand.
My business card fits nicely into the plastic envelope. I tell them to make sure to keep the card and the fish together because the card keeps the fish from getting folded, and if it gets folded it doesn't work. The cards find their way home! I have considered getting information stickers to put on the OUTSIDE of the envelope, but so far have been too lazy to do so. |

I give kids my business card all the time, but then my business card is also an easy to learn magic trick, so I guess I'm really giving them a free magic trick that just happens to have my contact information on it.
If anyone is interested in doing the same thing, you can take a look at Kings Fool. Make them yourself, or have them professionally printed. Until we appear again, Kipp Sherry |

Kipp: That is a good system and method. In that way, you are giving the kids something they want to keep and hold on to because they are enjoying it. It has perceived value to them, and so they will not discard it so easily.
