Hey ladies (and gents)!
Tonight on Phenomenon Angela Funovits will be performing. She is the only woman competing on the show. I have worked with Angela, and coached her - she IS a phenomenon! I think she is going to make a huge impact for women mentalists, and women magicians! But she will still need our support. So make sure you tune in and then vote for her! |

I thought she was awesome. I think, however, Geller saying how he liked the way she used her sensuality was something of a backhanded compliment. I think her performance merited being put through to the next round on its own without the shadow of her having used sex being implied. She was that good, imho.

Actually, I am glad Uri picked up on that. I have always urged Angela (as I do all female magicians) to use her sensuality to nth degree! I'm glad that she took my advice! I am also really glad she did the spike routine. In on of our coaching sessions about a year ago I advised her to add this routine because of the intense emotional impact of a beautiful, sexy woman risking impalement. I'm glad she and the producers agreed and she went forward with this.
Next week's celeb guests are The Girls Next Door. I can't wait to see IF Angela used another idea with them that we came up with... |

I for one did not like the comment by Uri.
Why do we have to compare women to sex all the time? Obviously, the men like and support it, but I think it's crass. Angela, if you are reading this, you don't have to go there. Don't assume the same mindset as Brittany, Madonna, and others. Yes it sells, yes it gets more gigs, but in the end it's cheap. Have the "courage" to perform at a different level, regardless of male encouragement. Best regards, Tod Torrent

Angela has her work cut out for her. She will obviously make the cut but with Jim Callaghan to compete with (for the final prize I mean).
Anyone care to disagree? I don't know how the layman viewers perceive Jim's performance but not too may performers have found his act pretty darn good. I think I enjoyed the close up as much as the stage work last night. Also I think will be McCambridge up there and with his next stage performance coming. I am wondering how much time will be allotted for routines next week?

Okay, to address the issue of "sensuality" being used in a performance. Let me say that I did NOT watch Phenomenon, so I'm not going to comment on how Angela performed.
There is a difference between being "sensual" in a performance and being "sexual" in a performance. Using sexuality in a performance will more often than not give a "sluttiness" to the performance, and usually have the male members of the audience saying "Man! I'd like to b*** THAT!" It objectifies women as only being there for a man's pleasure. I will admit that I have been guilty of that type of performing in the past. Being SENSUAL in a performance creates an air of desire and pleasure. It makes the male members of the audience say something like, "Wow! I'd like to have HER on my arm when I go to <insert snooty function here>!" Sensuality uses more senses than just sight when watching a performance. It uses all the senses. Margarette

Don't get me wrong, I liked that aspect of the presentation. That women and men are different is a good thing. My point is that her performance would have stood on its own merit. She is a very attractive and alluring young lady and that comes across without being pointed out. She had command of the stage and. There was no doubt she was in charge. Her dramatic sense was impeccable.
What I objected to in Geller's comment is that it was, in my opinion (and that is all it is), tantamount to an accusation of using sex in a manipulative way to get ahead (regardless of how complimentary he made it sound) thus diminishing a well done performance. My point is it was unnecessary to point at that. It was the best of show last night, and I would still say that if she had worn a gunny sack. She is a first class magician and deserves to be seen in that light. In a perfect world it would be a non-issue as it should have been coming from a "judge". That is why I objected to his making that comment. You have every right to be proud of her. She acquitted herself as well or better than everybody else I've seen on there. I simply think that Geller's focusing on that plants an idea in the minds of a number of people (who vote) that colors her as unable to stand on her own merits.

Okay, I'm obviously saying this badly. Her beauty is one of her assets, no argument there. It creates a mystique about her that draws the observer in a way that I have never seen. My objection has nothing to do with that. Nor does my objection have anything to do with her using it.
I simply do not like the implication behind Geller's comment. Perhaps I inferred something he did not intend and my dislike of the man colored the way I heard it.

Angela has my full support on this show. It's great to see a fellow Buckeye on national TV. She is talented and very beautiful and has a lot going for her. Keep up the great work Angela. I know you'll go far!

I think the format is working against the performers on Phenom, but she's hanging in there. I don't know how these competition shows work. But as long as the voting is not rigged I'd expect she's got a great shot at winning.
Check out her videos on YouTube. From the way she interacts with her audience it's obvious she's in magic for the right reasons. This lady is going places. She a "happy-maker", for sure. |

Allow me to confuse your count Dr Spektor
After some of the posts I read elsewhere I expected to see pornography when I checked out her act on YouTube. At the very least her skirt above her head. What a letdown! She was wearing enough fabric to clothe 10 box jumpers. When did a shapely leg become offensive? A friendly happy beautiful intelligent woman with incredible sparkling eyes presenting interesting and mystical entertainment. The giggling was a bit annoying - 20 year olds always annoy me with that - and we certainly don't want attractive 20 year old female magicians presenting themselves as attractive 20 year old female magicians. In future she should wear a hijab and stick with book tests. Destiny |

I said I think it’s unfair to judge her using different criteria than the men. I never said what she should or shouldn’t wear. I also said I would like to see her win with her talent. Hiking her dress up reinforced a female stereotype that women will manipulate men sexually to get ahead. I’m twice Angela’s age but I was twenty myself once. I’m not too old to forget the nightclubs and mini dresses, nor the fun of male attention. I may be older - and I’m not as beautiful as a young Angela Funovits - but I’m not exactly an old hag either. I still get my share of compliments from gentlemen, even younger ones occasionally. I say that because I noticed you always use the qualifier “beautiful” as though beautiful women are somehow a different species than ordinary women. My problem is not with what Angela wore, it’s with the fact that Angela is being judged by different criteria than the men. That and I wish Angela wouldn’t play into female stereotypes. That’s ALL I said. If you have a problem with either of those two points then please, by all means, say something. But please don’t try to paint me out as though I’ve said some extreme mantra I never said. Such extreme rhetoric only hinders genuine and productive debate. Holly

Holly, not directed at you - I merely pointed out that what is considered appropriate attire for magicians (male or female) is often a point of debate, that's all.
In entertainment there are two choices that can be made in regards to stereotypes - either embrace them or shatter them. Sometimes you can shatter them by embracing them... Let that hang on the clothesline of your mind... I think all women are beautiful. |
