I am certainly biased since I am the owner of Lybrary.com, but since I have lived in this 'magic download' space for nearly a decade I can give you a few suggestions.

There are a number of high profile magicians who offer their ebooks through their own website. The ones that come to mind are Peter Duffie, Tom Stone, Jon Racherbaumer, Michael Close and Bob Cassidy. Of course there are many other magicians I am missing here who offer some download products online but they are too many to list here quickly. So one option is to look for the author online and see if they offer their products for download. The biggest problem with these are that these are by nature 'on the side' shops where you might have to wait a few days to get a response, or where the server might be down more often than with other sites, or where you might run into other technical problems. However, the benefit is that you have the opportunity to interact with the author directly which can be very helpful if you have any issues with the contents of the ebook.

Peter Duffie in particular was one of the first to embrace the digital medium and is a very prolific ebook writer. Michael Close has followed my lead to include video clips in his ebooks. Tom Stone does a beautiful design job and Jon offers a unique point of view. Bob Cassidy is a genius in my opinion but unreliable when it comes to following up on orders. This combination is actually quite typical. Often the more creative artists are not good business people and it is not a good idea for them to sell their own wares. That is why we have dealers who make the dealing their profession.

Some online magic shops have recently started to offer ebooks but I have yet to see anybody beside my own Lybrary to really embrace it whole heartedly. The Lybrary has without a doubt the largest collection of magic ebooks with over 500 products and I am the only shop that has embraced ebooks for more than 7 years. All other shops treat it as one of many product lines they serve. The online and digital world moves fast and unless a dealer dedicates his full energy towards downloads you the customer will run the risk of receiving less then top service.

To give you one example. The Lybrary offers you free permanent downloads for your ebooks. All your purchases are placed into a 'digital shelf' from which you can re-download them anytime you wish. I am also constantly streamlining the website to make it faster, easier to use and more convenient for you. This means there is no need to wait for a human to email you a PDF which might get caught in a spam filter or might be too large for your email server to accept. When you get a new computer you just download your entire ebook shelf again. There is nobody you need to ask for permission, there are no individual authors to contact etc. I would also think that the likelihood of Lybrary to be around in a decade is higher than the average magicians website.

I am looking into a number of other features to better serve my customers. I am frequently online and can be reached by email, phone or on various forums. So if a problem should occur you will always quickly get directly to me and we can sort it out. I am sure there are many here on the Café who can attest to my speed and fairness when it comes to resolving customer issues.

Ebooks are for the Lybrary all we do. That is why we think we are clearly the best place to shop as well as the best place for authors to sell their downloadable products.

Anyone know if Lybrary send the files after the transaction or we need to wait for them to do it manually?

thanks

In the vast majority of cases the download is enabled immediately. However, sometimes the handshake between the Lybrary server and Paypal can take a while, or in rare cases never occurs and then we have to do it manually, but this is the exception. Paypal is unfortunately not the fastest when it comes to sending notification of the transaction to the merchant.

Sometimes customers who opt to pay with Paypal use an eCheck rather than a direct balance transfer. Clearing of an eCheck can take a few days, which means that your download will only be enabled once the eCheck clears.

Although Chris' post on 11/04/07 may be considered biased, I have been a satisfied customer of Lybrary.com for some time now and can attest to everything he stated. I have yet to find a comparable online E-Book source that could match his. Highly recommended!

Let me also offer an endorsement to lybrary.com. IMHO, the biggest feature is the permanent downloadability of your purchases.

To elaborate - you download. Cool. Your PC takes a dump. If you've not backed up, as many people do not, you're SOL and have to go back and find where you bought each item and deal with getting reauthorized (i.e. "your download link is good for 10 days" from other sites).

Also, another situation arose recently for me, where, while I do back up, I got something from someone not on lybrary, and I misplaced it. I'd not had the chance to categorize it nor back it up yet, and the file was not named something I was able to easily search on (okay, my own fault) but had it all been on lybrary, I could have re-obtained it rather than search for like 5 hrs for it (yes, I did finally find it...)

So yes, Chris has a great model here - for purchasers, great. For authors, use it if you can.... please...
Dave

The e-books I've ordered from Tom Stone have come instantly. The ones I've gotten from Peter Duffie have come very quick. It's always nice to buy from the creators.

I've had an excellent experience with http://www.lybrary.com , I always check there first if the ebook I'm looking for is there.

Excellent website, highly recommended, bought more than 10 ebooks from there, no complaints, instant service as well.
