Hey there!
What kind of tables do you guys use on the street? Is it that elegant magic table or just a wodden box? That would be very interesting. BTW, do you think the general rule "a magician should always be dressed a little better than his audience" applies for the streets too or could we dress like jugglers? Best, Chris

Chris,
When doing street work, I use an upended, old trunk, with wheels on one end (sort of like a suitcase table) But I only use it to store props and provide a focal point; everything I do is done off-table. As well, it probably should be done about shoulder level, so that those in the back and those passing by can see. As for what to wear, the street is probably the one exception to the rule that you refer to. You suggest "jugglers" as an example. Exactly. You should be wearing something that makes it obvious, and from a distance, that you are doing something and not just passing through. While I don't wear a Spandex harlequin body suit (you don't want THAT picture in your head!) I do wear an outfit that is different enough from what the customers are wearing that it's clear I'm not just a passerby. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

I use a homemade affair, using a waiter’s tray stand for a base and a fairly large top (18 inches x 24 inches)
One side of the top is surfaced with ½ inch foam then covered with a heavy-duty upholstery material (I use a casino like shade of green). The other side has had green felt glued directly onto the board and then has had mitered wooden “rails” put around the perimeter (to keep balls from rolling off) Thus this top has two working surfaces. One surface is fairly soft and good for most tabletop magic that requires a soft-pad working surface. Frankly it is the one I use the most. The other is a hard surface and is good for a chop cup routine, and provides a good solid backing for my card stab – I add a cardboard insert for the card stab. Finally, I have a piece of bent metal on one of the bottom cross bars of the base, one inch wide and about 8 inches long bent to fit the top. When I close the base, I can slide one of the narrow edges of the top into the metal holder and use a small leather strap to hold it in place. A shoulder strap, and I can carry the whole mess fairly easily. This table cost about $50.00 USD to build and less than a day construction time. I have tried to attach a photo of it in it’s near final construction phase. As to dress style. For me it depends on the venue. I tend to do a number of Renaissance fairs and dress in appropriate costume (see attached photo - I'm on a break - No I don't smoke, that's a fake cigar!) I have even performed in a kilt (now that’s misdirection!) In Key West last summer, I was in shorts, sandals, colorful t-shirt, with an open Hawaiian type of shirt worn (coat like) over it. By the way, my over-shirt is gimmicked with a Topit. I tend to dress comfortably (mainly in cottons), tastefully, and colorfully. Click here to view attached image.

I must admit, I love suitcase tables. Mostly it's because I like being able to carry everything in one box, set it up, perform on it (well, beside it mostly), take it down and go. Esp. when I'm working the streets, I like being as portable as possible and there's nothing worse than carrying around a ton of things under each arm and even worse, making two trips. Suitcase table (depending on what you have in them) are also quite heavy and hard to knock over.
As for dress, just make sure they know you're not just a guy on the street (like Peter said). A hat, if nothing else, is very good for that. I wear a full costume, but to each his own. Sable
I don't believe in reincarnation, but I may have in another life.

I have just purchased a pro light table. Its a tripod type stand with a screw top flange. I have used a nice looking (23mm) round chopping board as a top. I only use the table top for the animal trap in the worlds most dangerous card trick. All my pros and table top plus water bottle and other bits fit in a shoulder bag. And I can carry the table base in one hand. I can attach the stand to the bag but it makes it a little awkward. I choose this style of table as it is easy to carry, quick to set up and sturdy. Also a big thing it its small and slight so I cant hide be hide it and it dose not block view.
It was important to me that the table looks clean and straight. The wooden table top I chose took a bit of hunting down but pretty happy with it. Also I like I can just take the stand and flange away and find a wooden top for it as I travel.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

I enjoy showtime magics table top and suit case. It has been through a lot with me. While the suit case it self is nice, I also have a vintage case I attached strong Magnets to the bottom to make it all. Compact. Here is showtime case and table stand.

I often work on uneven surfaces, so I like a tripod with legs that adjust independently rather than a base with four even legs.

Get a Tim Flynn table and a waiters stand. Plays big and looks beautiful.

Thanks. I like that table top a lot although it seems a little large for me.
But it IS a really nice top. We have a couple of restaurant equipment stores here, so if I ever get out of my doldrums, I could pick up a stand with no problems. Hey! Facebook page too! https://www.facebook.com/TimFlynnMagician

I once saw a project that a person affixed a pouch that folded with the tray stand that he kept his props in. So he didn't need a case or anything. If you keep a on the body pouch for your hats it could be a feasible option

I like the keyboard stand myself. It's what kozmo uses in his dvds. I like how you can adjust the height. It also makes the table height be above my waist. I plan on using a metal doorstop with a mouse on it for uneven surfaces. Take that with a grain of salt. I have almost zero busking experience.

The keyboard stands is definitely feasible, but for the height adjustment to be effective you should make sure your table top is wide enough to accommodate the drop in height as the top gets wider the lower you make it

My first busking table, and I will be using it again shortly, is one of those old Portable voting booths,
Take sections out of the legs, to get it to the acceptable height for your performing style, a bit of Velcro wrapped around the legs connect to a shelf. And A drape can cover the legs and shelf, appearing very professional. The bottom of the "case" a piece of high density foam, with cut outs for your effects. The legs, the shelf, drapes, a Close up pad, about 6 different decks of cards, a 4 ring set of 12 inch rings, ropes, and all sorts or effects all go into this single self contained case. Google [portable voting booth, and let your imagination, take over. I think I got mine for about 20 bucks on eBay years ago. Only negative thing was that it wouldn't hold my Gazzo cups. The cups are bigger that the case is thick. I use a framed flat plywood, on a keyboard stand for that. David |
