Hey Dove people,
My female dove has caught a virus. I have no idea how she got it. I took her tot he vet and she has been given some rehydration salts. She is barely moving. Have any of you experienced anything similar? She was fine yesterday and now she just looks awful. It's so sad :-( Anything you think might help would be amazing. Thank you! Luke

Fresh water everyday and throw away old seeds.
For now, the best thing to do is thoroughly clean the cage. Use bleach to clean the base, and scrub everything down. Unfortunately, Doves can get sick for no apparent reasons, and its just nature taking its course. If you have had a drastic weather change, this can cause sickness, Cold breezes (drafts), malnutrition, etc...there is no telling really. Even the water given to the doves can have bacteria in it that while harmless to humans, can be devastating to birds. You just never know. Could even be a parasite picked up from a seed. Hope all turns out well.... |

Luke, after cleaning everything as Thomas mentioned, make sure your dove is segregated from any others you have. Regardless of the weather temperature in your area, put a lamp near her cage to keep her warm. You've done all the right things so far.

Thanks for the help guys,
Sadly she died this morning. The vet told me to give her some rehydration salts and to keep her fluids up she seemed ok, but to be honest I wasn't sure she would live. I did segregate her from Eldon(my other dove)so hopefully he will be fine. But I cleaned out the cage just to be sure. Thanks again. Take care, Luke

Sorry to hear about the loss. Unfortunately, though, its just something that we can't control sometimes. You did the right thing of cleaning the cage though because one sick bird can destroy a whole flock.

Sorry for your loss. I have not lost a bird yet but I dread the day I do.
You get attached to them, like any pet I suppose, but more so I think because you work so closely with them, and spend so much time with them. I hope your other bird remains healthy. Best wishes, Steven |

Luke, while some people might find it silly to grieve over the death of a pet, I know how close you and your dove were and how much her passing must sadden you. Over the weeks, pets can become members of our families, our friends and our confidantes. It was clear that you adored her and that the feeling was mutual. I know that you and Eldon will miss her very much.
Peace, love and soul, Mike |
