Hey there,
I'm looking for input about producing a neutral person - Someone like a CEO or Santa....I have thought about a Bryce Screen etc etc...but does anyone have any ideas or actual ways they have produced someone..??.. The show that I have been asked to do is just done in a bare hall...they asked me if I could do my standard 40 minute XMAS show for them but do a Santa Production at the end...I told them I would get back to them in a day or so... Any ideas would be great, something preferably cost effective...I still might want an actual illusion, but for now I'm just looking for something that isn't expensive, maybe something I can build. Thanks. |

IMO The best investment you can make all year are the B-Screen by Creative Magic.

There are many ideas in the works of Paul Osborne. I have recently been reading through old Genii magazines and there are a lot of screen-type productions that would work very well for your needs. Some of them are ungimmicked, and ultra simple to build and use. These are probably all reproduced in his books.

Victory Carton Illusions....two cardboard fridge boxes that nest. A little paint (red or green latex), wide book tape on the edges to give a nice crisp look. Decorate with garland, and a wreath on the outer box. I have found that the surprise is not how the person is produced, but WHO you produce!!!
Cost of the above, less than $50.00. Boxes free from an appliance store. (If you use foamcore for more lasting use, this will cost you a little more!) Good luck! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

Good Thinking Blair....I have thought about just buying something from Creative and still might, but considering I'm really using these for ONE show this season, that might be the best way to go.

Tip over trunk. Very small learning curve, little to no rehearsal necessary.

Black art might be something to consider. It's quick and inexpensive.

The main problem you mention for any of these illusions is the "bare hall" described in your first post. I'm assuming you can at least put up some backdrop screens so you have some hiding space for Santa. You also don't say if you are working completely solo or at least have one assistant you can count on.
Jim Gerrish's Transfigmigration from his PVC Pipe Illusion Book 2 (on my site) is probably the least expensive Illusion for Santa Appearances (unless you already own some of those illusions suggested here by others). I have done the Transfigmigration with no backdrop and just in front of a doorway with good success, but like all of the illusions mentioned so far, you really need at least one assistant to make it happen smoothly.

If you have a doorway handy and want to use the large boxes, so he doesn't have to move much, cut a LARGE hole in the back of the inner box.
Presentation: Show inner box flat and empty. Square it up in front of the door/curtain slit. While showing outer box flat and empty, the producee steps into the inner box. Outer box is now slid over it, thereby hiding the back entry opening. Move everything forward, turn (slide) it around, lift both boxes straight up an there he is. Boxes can then be folded! You didn't mention whether you'll be working with any assistants or not, but if you are there's a frameless/boxless flash portal production in "Illusion Show Know-How" (Jim Sommers) that could work. What the two assistants needed for the illusion have to hold could even be designed around a Christmas theme.

Creative Magic Square Circle if your CEO is willing to sit down for a few minutes . . . Great, portable item.
