Do you think this is because people think by your your using the word ghost makes it sound lighter or more like a spoof? Other words we have thought about using when we talk about these things, each of which has its own bias, are spirit and angel, and the other side.

The wording seems to take away the stigma of its going to be talking to the dead/seance (as in a religious context). Also, people are intrigued by ghosts. Everyone does like a "little" scare.

Actually, I get pretty heavy in the routine but I have set the people up by explaining "what is a ghost?" It MAY BE the a true shade that is trapped in an unseen limbo world or as comfortable as the feeling/sense you get when you visit your old family home. You go in the kitchen and you seem to sense your grandmother is still there baking a pie. Blah, blah, blah, etc.

Now when I do a L&D or whatever and granny comes back, its a whole different ball game. And yes, I have had people freak out but heck, I'm just dealing with ghosts! And, I don't ask for a love offering or pass the plate.

Since a seance presentation is such an important part of one of our current shows, I have read this thread several times from the beginning. Our show continues to run.

In reading the last post Lary said "I don't' ask for a love offering or pass the plate." Always trying to think of ways to add to our income, I said to myself, would this in some way be possible?

Then I thought, as in the carnival blow off of the blade box and Penn & Tellers blow off, if I remember it correctly, of Penn being in a barrel, asking the audience to contribute a dollar (or whatever) to see how it was done.

Could such a set up be done where the audience would walk thru at a small donation, to see the various items that caused the manifestations during the dark seance segment of the show. I know some here might consider this exposure, but others here might consider it education or debunking. I am thinking of such items as reaching rods, birds, items that glow, etc., not actual magic secrets.

I do not think it would work for us, as we like to maintain part of the mystery, but it might be considered or work for some here.

As to how we promote the show and what we disclaim or claim in the promo, can be seen at http://PsychicTheater.com.

Would be interested in any suggetions or comments on the promo.

PS. We have very thick skins.

NOTE OF IMPORTANCE --

BBC Last night revealed that in Great Britain there is a new Spirit Mediums Association -- whose goal is to accredit "real" mediums and eliminate charlatans.

When questioned by a skeptic -- they were very cloudy on real vs. evidenced base. It came down to a discussion of a "charge for services" and whether the service of itself was fraudulent.

(On Brother Shadow -- check with members of Shadow Net as to his e mails being active and reachable.)

Dick -

As you have been running a long time -- and Scranton might not be considered the hub of the western cultural work or a major "population center" I would like to ask you about "repeat" customers?

Have you actively been promoted by word of mouth and repeat customers? To promote the repeat attendance do you change the show (like a movie changes) or is the format more organic in reacting to the individual audience for each performance?

Have you worked a cost of advertising and promotion figure into your budget -- or a percentage?

If you feel these are confidential pieces of information because this is an open section of the Café - let me know if you need to move this to the members sections -- or a PM discussion -- if you please.

Dear Gregg;

Have enjoyed your various posts and so will try to answer as best as I can.

Not quite sure what you are getting at but will try to answer as best I can, both in public and by sending some confidential info by PM.

First you should go to http://PsychicTheater.com to get an idea of how we promote this show.

Also to
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=62
for some of my thoughts and independant reviews of the show.

The show has a set theme and script, though because of my performing style, every show is ad libbed from a loose outline. Parts of the show change over time as it evolves, but not with the idea to bring people back. We do get returns, when people bring or recommend their friends. To them the show would mostly appear the same though many of the routines change depending on the people, participation, Q&A, reactions, etc.

You are right Scranton is not the most central area on the map. When we were in NYC we had a sophistacated successful cabaret called The Magic Towne House that enabled us to develop an adult audience and helped starte magicians such as Rocco, Johnny Ace Palmer, Meir Yedid, Eric DeCamps,David Regal, Peter Samelson, Michael Chaut, Devlin, Levent, and countless others. We also featured others that were established such as Frank Garcia, Slydini, Blackstone, Jr, to mention just a few. This would not be possible in Scranton. Magic here generally is thought of as mostly for kids. Most of our specal events would have been only for children, but since my partner Dorothy Dietrich has a Houdini collection and so do I, we decided to open The Houdini Museum that would appeal to all ages.

We are in the Pocono area, which attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year, especially in the summer. So we had our adult and/or family audience.

But still no evening events. For several years we did a Spook-tacular magic Halloween show each October, but it was again percieved as mainly an event for youngsters.

Then I wrote our current show, "HAUNTED!" Mind mysteries & THE BEYOND part of which was based on my ESP show that I did at The Magic Towne House and on club dates in the NYC area in addition to other kinds of magic shows that I did. It has a story line as you might pick out parts from the above web site.

As to the cost of the show, it is minimal, as we just add the info about it to our very large ongoing promotion for The Houdini Museum. So the added cost is small but the added income has been quite good. Some of this is confidential, some of which I will discuss in a PM to you. We produce several full color promotional pieces, advertise in several tourist publications, do trades, co-op advertising, etc.

One show helps the other. People come to one and then the other, or book both at the same time, one for the day and the other for the evening.

Hope this answers yours and others questions. Ask and will try to reply.
