Well gang, I've become a rope nut over night and Magic Ian and Al are at fault!
As I posted in another topic Ian's PN sparked my interest and a very nice offer of assistance from Al followed in a PM. I was up past midnight last night reading posts in this section, up before dawn to get my work out of the way and have been reading and playing with rope all day! How did I miss rope magic in the beginning? I'm mostly into coins, C&B's and the easier card stuff and until now felt challenged yet fulfilled. Ropes and rings are a great add to my ever growing love of magic and I look forward to learning from ya'll and hopefully will contribute a tidbit here and there as well! Thanks Al, for making yourself available! Mick |

Mick,
I know exactly what you mean. I do Professor's Nightmare and Cut-and-Restored in every magic show I do. From time-to-time I did the Rope with Four Ends. I did another one I saw on a Jay Sankey video where two ropes are used. Spectator chooses one and a knot you tie in your rope jumps onto the rope in the spectator's hand. I have since added Linking Ropes and a multi-phase Ring and Rope. Like you, I was impressed with Professor Ian's twist on PN, but I don't know if I would use it in a show, because when I do the PN -- like most others -- I change them back to their original length, which is very impressive to audiences. Bobby p.s. I don't think there is a cure. Get used to it.

The effect to a layman is that you have done the miracle of making three ropes longer. Now, you are left with three ropes with which you can actually go into linking ropes (with a slight modification of the performance). My PN is not gimmicked, but if you add the LR gimmick into it, it will allow a new dimension. You mentioned doing linking ropes. Also I will post a routine from my lecture where I do linking ropes directly from the standard professor's nightmare. There is more to the routine on the DVD, but the routine is 11 minutes long and I can use it in the show anytime. I mention this, because the nightmare restoration, although standard or classic is truly a redundancy. It has merit if that's all the rope you will do, but the method I use (which has been copied), allows the elements of the PN to expand into a full routine. Consider it an alternate ending to a book that is just as good as the first ending. If you don't know about the other book, you are not disappointed. We all generally blame it on Al. Not rope magic, just other stuff.
Rope magic has long been a passion of mine. From the time I learned my first rope routine about age 9 or 10 I've always had a rope routine and or a ring and rope routine in my act. Rope is visual, adaptable, inexpensive, and easy to carry, making it a near perfect magical prop.

I could easily spend the rest of my life learning and perfecting nothing more than the Linking Rings, Cups and Balls, and Rope.
Al helped spark my own obsession with the ropes. He owes my wife a lot of money for what this particular obsession cost her (Out of my check....)
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Magic Ian,
Thanks for sharing the videos, and you did wake me up. I truly appreciate the encouragement, inspiration and feedback from the Café. Thanks to all, Bobby
