Thanks for the tips, around the tires...I like it... I'll try to avoid driving in it, if I can't walk in it I'm sure not able to drive in it.
For you snow types it wasn't always easy living in nice weather areas. I lived on the beach in Florida and often people would walk through the yard as they headed to the public beach, very distracting during those January bbq's. Also when you go out there is that sand to walk through and it gets in the carpet. |

Snow?
That's that white stuff, right? In North Dakota, we used kitty litter and hob-nailed boots for slick slopes. And use caution. While a broken coccyx (plural = coccyges) may sound funny to some people (like me), most evidence indicates quite the contrary. They hurt like hell.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

What is a hob nailed boot? I still don't know what a snow tire is.... I have had two or three slip falls this past year cuz of ice and amazingly other than one pretty bad scrapping no major injuries. I learned to walk like a crab, short lil' steps. Hey! We got snow in the mountains today!

MagicSanta,
One of the rites of passage growing up in the shores of Lake Erie (Fredonia NY, half way between Buffalo NY and Erie PA), was learning to drive on snow and ice. Our Dads would take us to an iced over parking lot, (an empty one, like a school parking lot on the weekend), and have us drive around, gunning the engine, hitting the brakes, turning the wheels, turning donuts, etc, to get the hang of it. I suspect it was as much fun for them as it was for us kids, skidding and sliding around on the ice like we were driving a dodge'em car. I still know of no better way to get acclimated and confident at Winter driving.
Woke up.

Snow tires? How much snow do you expect? We get 4 months of the stuff, but the majority of people use "all season" tires. Avid skiers usually change to snow tires, but the average person around here doesn't go through the bother.
Oh, and for the record, the ground is still brown as I type John

My advice is don't go down those roads unless you really can't avoid it. Snow tires have a combination of a different tread pattern and, sometimes, hard studs. They make an awful racket on dry pavement, but they really are the best if you spend a lot of time in the mountains.

I avoid snow when I can (note, todays storm so far consist of clear skies and 70 degree temps...ewwww scary). My problem is I live in a very rural area and it is 20 miles to the grocery store and gas station etc.. Now if I drive another 30 minutes past that I'm in the Sierra Mountains and in that 30 minutes the three inches of snow I get can turn into six feet.
Note: I know three inches isn't a lot of snow for many of you but to me it is three inches more than I'm use to. I never even saw snow until I was in my 20s and then I thought it was ash from a forrest fire falling. |

One more thing to watch out for. Everybody will tell you that they are experts at driving on icy roads. Don't believe them. As soon as the serious snow falls, our streets are full of idiots who think that their brake times are the same in winter as in summer. The worst are the SUV drivers who seem to figure that because they can quickly change lanes, everyone should get out of their way.
Experience matters, a lot. But common sense and patience matter just as much. Given the choice, stay home until the streets are clear again. John

I'll tell you how out of it I am. First time I came up to Lake Tahoe someone gave me warnings about driving in the snow etc (that actually ended up being the first time I saw it snow). I come back and I told the guy "I don't know what you were talking about, I ran into one African American guy and he was real nice". The co worker looked at me like I was nuts and said "What does that have to do with anything?", I said "you told me to watch out for black guys", he laughed...he had warned me about black ice. I never heard of such a thing before.

I went to the vet cementary this morning and realized something. I have two roads to get out of here to civilization on. One is toward the Sierra Nevada and every mile would bring more snow. The other, I noticed this morning, has drop offs about three feet off the road and no rails! HELP!

So, let me get this straight. You are still at the Vet Cemetery?
I am amazed that you have Internet access. Sorry, I can't help you, you're screwed.
