Does anyone know about some good books on the subject?

The only book on this is the book of life. Experience. Just remember that yu are there to entertain, not fight or win any head games. We run into them sometimes and most of the time if we remember our purpose (to entertain), we just entertain.

A heckler wants attention. At our expense. Do not make enemies with them or anyone in the audience.

How to do this? I learned that if I add fuel to the fire the fire grows bigger. If I don't want a bigger fire...

I personally don't like confrontation. It's not fun.
You have to give it away to keep it.

IF you have a really good effect that you are comfortable with do it to him/her that usually shuts them up they may still heckle you but like all magic, people understand that you only appear to be doing the impossible and by saying when asked how it's done "it's magic" they know you are just covering your secret. Then just asked them to do it unless you have used some gaff or other that they would see right through

First of all, be sure that the person you consider to be a heckler IS one, and not just someone who wants attention or thinks he/she is helping your show, by adding "humor".
Real hecklers are fairly rare and many performers, especially bad magicians, tend to fire away indiscriminately, thereby losing the audience's good will in the process.

I ignore them if I can. I've found that responding to them often just adds fuel to the fire. And as Peter suggested, you can antagonize some good audience members if your replies to the heckler are too caustic.

Thank you all for your replies. Together they must contain a decade of wisdom. I really understand the importance of not getting into some sort of argument, and I am not an argumentative person. I also know that you could easily misinterpret some people as hecklers. The stoppers are for a very special group...my colleagues... They LOVE to heckle in a "friendly" tone Smile And I´m not late to respond...... So we´re on the same "wavelength". I´m just looking for some new ideas, my imagination is kinda drying up.

Once again, thanks for the replies.

If you should be annoyed by a heckler, put them in the spotlight and go on with your trick with them. most of the time a heckler just wants attention. you will be the better person if you give them your attention and 9 times out of 10 they will calm down afterwards.if not punch them in the eye lol...just kidding.
Good luck to all..

I guess it depends on where the heckler is. In a restaurant I was working one night, I had a know-it-all who was doing his best to spoil it for everyone. I finally had him help with a do-as-I-do routine. Using a TT, I poured Sweet-n-Low into my fist, followed by the empty package. He did the same. I produced red and white mints for the table while he had a hand full of sugar.

"Oh, I'm sorry. You knew how to do the other tricks. I thought you knew that one too."

Normally, I just let hecklers go. Sometimes I pick up some pretty funny lines from them that I use later. But experience told me I could get away with this one given the guy and the rest of the table.
