I find interesting reading old novels about cheaters and conmen. Does anyone know what is the earliest stories in literature about cheaters, conmen and/or gamblers. I read recently "Queen of Spades" by Pushkin and "The Gamblers" by Gogol, they only date back to 1850s. I know there something far prior to that, just wanted find out what.
Thanks upfront Pavlo

I do not like this movie. Someone from MKF (looks like Zhabin) made moderh flourishes. It was not such moves 150 years ago.

Try Chaucer's, "The Pardoner's Tale". About three gamblers who try and scam each other... and cheat Death.
And the teller of the tale, the Pardoner, is one of the all-time great, sleazy scam artists in literature. Unfortunately (for him) he boasts too much and gets his comeuppance.
Whenever I find myself gripping anything too tightly I just ask myself "How would Guy Hollingworth hold this?"

Girolamo Cardano wrote about cheating at cards in the 1500's. Walker did the same not too long before or after.

I know that Girolamo Cardano was an Italian mathematician who was the first to write books on mathematics and probability applied to chance and card games but I didn't know he wrote any kind of book related to cheating at cards.
CC, are you referring to "Liber de Ludo Aleae" ? |

I am not sure of the title of that book right now. It's on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember exactly.
Nor was I implying that this man penned anything solely related to cheating at cards. The book was on games of chance, which naturally led to the topic of cheating. From what I remember of it, it's a good read. CC |
