Can anyone point me towards a company or person that can make me a relatively inexpensive wand? I just need a straight black wand with a dull finish. I like the wand that comes with the Phoenix C&B sets, but I have not heard anything back from them regarding their wand. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Aaron |

If you want an inexpensive wand then the best you can do is to make it yourself.
Check others posts on this forum, expecially those from Bill Palmer, they are very helpful. My 2 cents... |

Cheapest method: Tear the cardboard tube off a coat hanger and color it with a black Sharpie. (or keep reading...)
Cheap method: Get a dowel the diameter you want, cut it the length you want, sand it smooth, and paint it with flat black paint, or color it with black leather dye found with shoe polishes at many stores. (or keep reading...) Still cheap method: Get a length of aluminum or steel rod the diameter you want, cut it the length you want, sand it smooth, and cover it with a length of black heat shrink tubing. (or keep reading...) Shameless plug method: I can turn you one from Ebony for a lot more money.

Another suggestion that's often made is to cover a drumstick or piece of dowelling with matt black electrical tape. You can whack the wand as much as you like and you won't mind if it breaks. If it does break, the electrical tape stops the broken section flying off and hitting someone.
Michael's suggestion using the black heat shrink tubing will make quite a very good wand. I can vouch for Michael's craftsmanship - I have two wands made by him including a magnificent 20" wand with flared tips...very very nice.

Not a mistake (LOL), it was probably one of those times when the wood felt right at that size, and it would have been a shame to chop it short.
I recall seeing a wand in David Price's collection years ago that was long and slender, and I remember being intrigued by it. I was probably thinking of it when I turned that one.

I got an email from Tom Frank not too long ago. He is not selling those black ironwood wands from the Phoenix cups separately. I agree that making it yourself is the cheapest way.

A flared wand? Sounds intriguing - I've never seen one...........

I wish someone would market a Robert-Houdin replica wand. I really liked the design he used and if anyone deserves a memorial wand it would be him.

I made a wand last night. I cut out the cross piece of a very heavy white plastic hanger (perhaps 3/8" thick) and wrapped all but the last inch of either in electric tape (like Gazzo).
The nice thing is that it has that black with white tip magic wand look which a drum stick doesn't...without paint. Since this type of wand is typical for street performance, painting the ends is rather silly. I drag my wand tip on the ground and hit the pavement with the tip quite often while busking, so I like that the white of the coat hanger can't wear off. The other thing I like about this over the drumstick wands that I've made is that the white tips make a more noticeable Flip vanish. Flip uses a white wand on his DVD with gave me the idea of experimenting with coat hangers. |

Michael just couldn't resist so I ordered a wand. Your maple/maple . Now I just can't wait to get it and play with it. John
